ParticipantRaybyrnes come on now. You gotta read my original post, it’s not a question of math it’s a question of how the markets work. I wish it were all about math ‘cuz then I’d be good at this investing thing (math scholarships paid for my UCSD degrees). I will admit to being dumb on stock markets.
Thank esmith, I’m hoping that’s they way it works! Yesterday China’s market crashed a little bit so I snatched up some bargain EWH, PGJ, and FXI ETFs. Looks like they’re bouncing back already (for once I’m LONG on these stocks):

ParticipantOK seriously, cash is a hot topic lately. The question should be: DO you want your wealth sitting in cash at the moment? More specifically, do you want your wealth in cash in US dollars?
Although we do see a downward trend, home prices are sticky so if you’re a real Pigg and waiting for the bottom it won’t be for at least another year and probably another several years.
If you have a good chunk saved for a downpayment and aren’t buying until you feel home prices have reached equilibrium with fundamentals, the value of your cash likely will decline alongside the price of homes. If you’re sitting on a pile of “downpayment” cash I strongly recommend you consider putting it in a place which will help to preserve or increase value.

ParticipantYes, I’m sure Chief Running Bear was referring to one of the smaller private banks. After reading his posts I looked into it quite a bit but am still on the fence about getting an offshore account. I’m being conservative with most of my assets in CDs at the moment but this sucks when you think of taxes and the ever-sinking dollar. Foreign stocks are an option and I’ve done well with them in the past but the volatility of China and other markets scares me back to square one.
This is a 3-glasses-of-wine post BTW.
