ParticipantWhat line did he cross?
That’s a serious question. Write it down in so we can see it? There’s a lot of assumptions into it or is it he dared to uttered verboten words?
I’m not defending him, But what is he guilty of? It’s a pretty big leap to brand a person a racist because he uttered words in anger at a confidante Particularly given his age and commonness of the views during the majority of his life

I really just don’t understand the sympathy for the guy.
Fear of 1984 and thought crime.
We are dangerously walking an edge of being unable even question certain ideas. But that’s a separate issue not present in this situation

ParticipantThat was a conversation?
It was a PRIVATE CONVERSATION between him and his mistress (let’s not kid ourselves). I’m pretty sure that everyone has said things in the heat of anger that they don’t want to be public.
Sure, she won’t admit to releasing the recordings. That might open her to civil and criminal liability.
ParticipantUSA Today article, sponsors are fleeing the ship see quote below. Do you think they should wait? Do you think they should say, no no, nobody should know that that was an illegl tape?
Do you think the knee jerk reactionary california public is going to care if it’s an illegal tape when your name is still hanging up there during clipper games?
Again, this is a FRANCHISE. In a Franchise, you own the debt and that’s about it, the FRANCHISOR, the parent company, owns the brand, the product rights and usually complete control of how stuff is done.
You, ‘the owner’, will do it their way…
That’s not just the NBA, that’s virtually every franchise with a solid national brand.
Public opinion isn’t bound by rules of the court. It’s a privte conversatin that was illegal recorded isn’t a defense for behaving like the schmuck everyone thinks you are.
That’s the core of ‘community’. They AGREE to live together under a unwritten set os norms.
This is America, you can do what you want, just don’t whine when the community kicks your *ss out for not staying in the norms.
Those norms have shifted pretty dramatically since Sterling was a young man.

LOS ANGELES – Sponsors are pulling a fast break away from the Los Angeles Clippers and their embattled owner, Donald Sterling. As the condemnation of Sterling and his racially insensitive comments spread Monday, major financial supporters of the NBA franchise announced they were severing ties with the Clippers.
In rapid succession, the mass exodus included used car seller CarMax, State Farm Insurance, Kia Motors America, airline Virgin America, P. Diddy’s water brand, AQUAHydrate, Red Bull, Yokohama tires and Mercedes-Benz.

Participant

This is not a free speech issue. His speech was not suppressed by the government.
Exactly. This is a case of business executives making the decisions that are best for their organizations.
In addition to the morale clauses there’s also typical clauses about behavior and statements that are detrimental to the organization.
His behavior is obviously now detrimental to the org.

Participant
Toyota has weighed the pros and cons of CA vs. Texas, and decided to leave. They undoubtedly based their decision on the vastly different costs of living in the two states, the taxes, utility costs, regulations, and “business friendly” comparison, and work ethic of the two different populations. Most of all, they have to be future-oriented, so they looked at the political trends of the two states and decided CA was getting worse in all of the above categories relative to Texas. We voters picked our government, now we are living with the results.
Me thinks you give the Execs too much credit for due diligance. While agree with the above, way too times have I seen top execs make major decisions like moving, closing a plant etc, based a personal issue and then set the team about justifying it.
Toyota’s factories are there. For execs with ‘residence’ there, they’ll be out of Cali’s 10.3% tax rate, etc. Where else would they have gone?
IMO, the political grease and incentives to build stadiums, move plants etc, is a leading source of corruption in our government.

ParticipantCalifornia is pretty full of that IMHO I can’t put my finger on exactly when, IMO, Hefner went from being ‘the Dude’ to creepy old guy with a thing for young barely consenting age blonde girls.
And at the risk of completely derailing the conversation, am I the only one whose guydar goes off when I see photos of Sterlings alleged mistress? I’m not trying to denigrate the transgender community but her image for me really reminds me of the few people that I’ve encountered that we’re in process of transition.

ParticipantWho? Who cares?
Oh I forgot. We want to turn the rantings of a 80 year old guy because he has money as a bellwether for the entire society
The guy behaved like an idiot. It’s nothing more than a egotistical 80 year old shooting off his mouth
But the talking heads can’t miss an opportunity to promote their agendas

ParticipantUnderstandable svelte. Just curious if it was a $1000 lawyer up and find out you’re porked or $25k lawyer up fight in court/arbitration
I totally get where your friends re coming from. Everyone lived with the assumed property line for years. Including the mature landscaping the. Someone came in and said we don’t care we want an add on. And let be honest IMHO if five feet of yard is enough to prevent the add on you’re doing McMansion building and. It shed be banned IMHO add ons shudder require a minimum 20 ft set back from the property line. Original buid cud have smaller but removes should be required to maintain space. Qa 10 ft set with one story homes is very different than two story homes
One point of advice when setting a fence you may want to make sure you’re right in the line if code allows or basically set it five feet back as you are still responsible for maintaining landscape on the other side if its your property
Of course when you put up a fence you can decide which way the finished face faces. I’ve seen people install them and put the nice finished face towed as their own house and not the neighbors.

ParticipantHow much did lawyering up cost your friends Svelte?
Also curious the OP said the neighbors had sprinlkers that sprayed their car and “( were there for a while before we bought home)” and “didn’t really have a good fence” Did it have a dilapidated fence? Chain linK? what’s the relationship from the fence to the sprinklers?
Also curious, the roses they cut? Were they yours or theirs? Or in the disputed zone that you now say is yours due to the property survey courtesy of sprinklers obviously, been in effect ‘theirs’.
As for the didn’t really have a good fence. Did it have any fence? Or is this an open side yard?
Really it just highlights challenges of unclear property boundaries.

ParticipantUcgal. I’d encourage you to reconsider the skylight in the master bath unless you have a door you keep closed. I used to have one with an open bath arrangement an even living only a mile from the beach. It made for very bright very early mornings June thru September. Even with a thick marine layer it’s surprisingly bright with a large skylight that is big enough to provide roof access

Participant

You probably don’t *have* to work long nights if you’re willing to cut down on your expenses somewhat…Don’t worry, when you get older like me, you begin to care less about working…sort of…
I didn’t have a choice. Being in charge of software configuration, I have to be available during code deployment to production which usually occurs at night to minimize impact on customers.
And working extra hours in my job doesn’t make me more rich. I am not a hourly employee.
Sure I start to care less about working… but I still work as much as I use to when I just started!
I suspect your real issue is your role in the organization is part of the new global economy tech sweatshop.
It doesn’t matter where you go, if you don’t change careers, the issues will be the same. Expectations to work night and weekends to ‘do the release’ and then expectations to work normal business hours to support developers and management.
The other option is to just develop a cavallier attitude to flex time and crank your hours back to 40-45 per week. The worse they can do is fire you and everyone should be fire once in their life.
It’s always a good discussion with management and will readily tell you if your manager is a human or a clueless corporate drone just trying to step on people to get ahead.
Needing to work extra time is part of job, needing to work extra time every week isn’t.
