ParticipantI don’t think there is any evidence he was rejected by women. All that I’ve read indicated he didn’t engage socially with anyone. you can’t be rejected by someone you don’t talk to. He was deluded. This has nothing to do with social learning and everything to do with being crazy. As a friend used to say of people that removed from reality – “40,000 years of therapy wouldn’t fix him/her.”. And I think that’s the case here. So what do you do with these people?

Participant

He didn’t have a screwed up value system. He had a screwed up brain. Perfect parenting wouldn’t have fixed that.
Having to have the hottest girls or hate them is a value system. Something I have already taught my boys not to embrace. My boys may be crazy as hell when they grow up but the normal thing won’t be to go kill girls they can’t have .
But your boys probably aren’t anywhere near as crazy as this kid was. That’s the point. He was broken. Possibly beyond repair. It wasn’t bad parenting. He didn’t need better parenting. He had a brain that did not function correctly. That may very well have been well beyond the fixes that current mental health care has available.
Participant
Spot on, spdrun. I’ve known a few people who stick their noses into everyone else’s business in the neighborhood, either not realizing or not caring about the fact that they, themselves, are the worst offenders in some respects.
As long as nobody is being harmed in any way, people need to mind their own business.
That’s kind of a false premise. No one would be complaining if they weren’t being harmed (or felt they were being harmed). I am not advocating being a busy-body – but I think people should respect the fair expectations of others. And I think it’s fair to expect that people will abide by the law.

Participant
Stupid laws and rules are meant to be broken, and in general, rules should only be enforced if someone is actually being harmed by them being broken.
Ratting on the owner of the house next door just to be a stickler serves no constructive purpose except to irritate the neighbor, and is a game that two can play at. I’m sure everyone breaks some regulation or rule at some point.
Besides: would you rather have an owner who is having a financial hard time rent out a few rooms, or have a foreclosed home sitting in limbo next door?
This country needs a bit more anarchy and fewer busybodies in order to run smoothly.
If it’s a stupid rule, the idea is to change it via the political system – not resort to anarchy. Unless you are a preschooler.
And the trend seems to be against renters. See: “Many towns tightening “no rental” rules”
http://realestate.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=18246184
According to MSN: “In May, in a ruling that upheld rental restrictions, the Indiana Supreme Court observed that it is “undisputed” that “an owner-occupant is both psychologically and financially invested in the property to a greater extent than the renter.”
I make my choices carefully and live up to the representations that I make to others. I think too many people just sign things and expect to weasel out of the parts that they don’t like.

Participant
If breaking the rules harms nobody, why exactly “should” they be followed? We’re talking about people sharing a house, not a toxic waste dump.
Live. Let live.
Yes, live, let live, and live up to the obligations that you have agreed to. If you want the opportunity to let multiple renters share your home, choose a home where that is permitted. I shared a home with 9 other students when I was in college; we were what I would consider well behaved but I wouldn’t want a similar house next door to me.

ParticipantFWIW – Zoning laws are one of the biggest issues that pertain to your question. You can go here:
http://apps3.sandiego.gov/siteinfoweb/begin.do
and enter the address of the home to determine the zone or zones in which it lies. Here are the rules relating to residential base zones, if you feel like looking through it: http://docs.sandiego.gov/municode/MuniCodeChapter13/Ch13Art01Division04.pdfBasically, different rules apply to different zones; something that requires a special permit in one zone may not be a problem a block away.
I have to say I disagree with a lot of the people who have already replied. The value of your home is influenced by the zone in which it lies. When someone buys (or rents) a home, they are paying for and relying on the zoning laws that pertain to the area. I don’t know anything about this specific situation, but if the minidorm rules, zoning laws, CC&Rs or whatever prohibit multiple tenants – those are the rules and they should be followed IMHO.

Participant

This isn’t the government, though. The team is subject to NBA regulations if it wants to do business with the NBA (play against other teams in the league). I suspect that he signed some sort of morals clause when he bought the team and kept it part of the league.
What if it was the HOA. You belong to an HOA it comes out that you said some particularly nasty things about a gay neighbor. Does the HOA have the rights to fine you. Force you to sell your house if 75% of the members vote you out.
I understand the NBAs reaction, they needed to appeal to popular opinion. The problem is it becomes a slippery slope. How long before the NBA owners don’t like Mark Cuban’s comments about something and force him to sell.
I think there is a point missing in this whole conversation. The NBA owns trademarks/servicemarks, which it allows others (such as Sterling) to use under defined terms. There are ALWAYS terms in trademark licenses that allow the license to be terminated if the licensee (in this case, Sterling) brings bad PR to the mark itself. Similarly, if a McDonalds franchise owner started coming to work dressed like Adolf Hitler, McDonalds would have the right to pull his license (with certain limitations). WHY is everyone getting so excited about someone having a contract that they AGREED to enforced against them?

ParticipantWait, aren’t you the guy from the “would you settle or break up” thread? If so, and this is the same relationship, I think you need to compare your posts.

Ok, I do take propecia for my thinning hair. It works! It would suck to go bald. I believe vanity is a sin that could send me straight to hell… but oh, well…
From what I can see, the only side effect of Propecia that they list is a decrease in sex drive. Maybe that’s a road sign on the road to hell?

Participant
I agree everything in the cosmos, may, in fact, be a joke. Just when we think we have it all figured out, life is over.
Other than doing everything I can for my family, and helping others, I really don’t take anything or anyone in this world too seriously. Like most of you, (possibly for different reasons) I find most of life on this planet quite hilarious.
That’s one reason we started investing in films. Once you tap into what makes people tick, you find it’s a very lucrative way to toy with the concepts of life and death through vampires, superheroes, dystopia, etc. We’re currently trying to analyze what the “next big thing” will be.
To my amazement, people all over the world–regardless of religious beliefs, or lack therof–seem to buy into those scenarios hook, line and sinker. The film industry has definitely perfected the skill of “playing the masses.”
Really? I though the line from William Goldman was “Nobody knows anything.”

Do you know how many times people have had “scientific data” that later turned out to be wrong??? For example, my mother made us eat margarine instead of butter when I was a kid because science said it was better for you than butter. Hah! Or how about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miasma_theory
My background is in science and I am amazed at how often people’s ungrounded beliefs pass for science.
True enough that a lot of dietary advice is wrong.
But eating less calories lengthens life. Proven.
…….
Eating fewer calories can also kill you. At what rate of intake does healthy turn to unhealthy? And with fewer calories comes a reduced opportunity to consume nutrients that are beneficial. Of course, there is a healthy balance that probably varies from person to person and with advancing age. But so far the optimal formula hasn’t been identified – as far as I’ve seen.

food and health and the worship of the body are the new nationalreligion.
I don’t give a shit what people eat.
But is you want to live longer, you can.
That kind of “proselytizing” is not the same as religion.
When you have scientific data on things that work then you should use it to achieve social goals. As an individual, I don’t care what people eat. But as part of a group, i do care that the right policies as not put in place.
Participant
I think many converters have a strange fantasy that there are vast hordes of Americans who simplyb h Avent been told about Jesus and the good news about getting saved. That’s why they have to let you know … it’s like letting people in on a legal little known tax break. It’s just so great. The word isntvout. It’s free money. How could you not want to hear about it?
I have had many more people try to convert me to an organic diet (or gluten-free) than I have had try to convert me to a religion. The need of people to convince others that the “converters” have found the answer in life is very strong. Think of all the philosophies that people try to push on you – how to raise your kids, how to spend your money, how to eat etc. we can’t live and let live because we are, at base, social animals who need to share information with other members of our group.njtosd
Participant
If I were gay, I’d know nothing about women… But I’d have lots of fag hag friends.
Based on what I’ve read, what you “know” about women is similar to the stereotypes I used to hear bandied about at my parents cocktail parties in the 70s. Maybe you’re in your 80s, but not gay.
