Beach punks and drugs
Are rampant in Mission and Pacific Beach. It really is tweaker central and frat house punk central. At first I used to have fun hang out there due to the amount of hot young college age eye candy but now nah I pass. I prefer the mellow beach in OB and north coastal beaches like Torrey Pines State Beach and Encinitas by far. Alas, these areas cost a fortune to live in so think it is out of my budget. Even in a crash if a 2 million home drops by 50 percent I still cant afford it. So looks like I will be stuck more inland for future home purchase unless I become some high powered exec.
mixxalotParticipantMisplaced priorities and 0 savings a big flaw in America
BSR- great story and sad reality in America.
Heck I dont even own a TV anymore just a laptop for work and do a lot of fitness and reading as hobbies they are healthy and low cost. Investing is another hobby that I am learning. Currently reading about asset allocation strategies.
I could buy now but would not be foolish to throw away money knowing the market will tank in San Diego. The savings would easily fund a new sports car, home tv theater, trip to europe and index funds with cash left over for the wait.
But I do realize that I am in the minority in America.
mixxalotParticipantConsumer waste and disposable income.
I went to Fashion Valley mall today and walked around and noticed the ladies with all the overpriced purchases from Neiman Marcus and whatnot.
Whats funny is how few Americans even cook meals anymore. There was a mile long line at PF Changs and Cheesecake Factory- both chain restaurants that server average food at ripoff prices.
Not only hours of waiting to eat, I would prefer to save my cash and not have to wait and fire up the grill like I did today when I got home and grilled some steaks. Cheaper than these chains healthier and tastier and NO WAIT!

As for me, I see prices dropping but its a slow deflate in the bubble.
I have flyers for same condos and homes from last year that now sell for 50k less. Thats a lot of coin. Just tell wifey that luxo SUV she always wants will be a steal if she can hold off on the nesting urges.
Thank goodness I am single!!!

Concho that gave me a hearty chuckle:
Ho ho ho hee hee hee ha ha ha. The difference between bugs here in SD and bugs in Texas is like the difference between pee wee football and the NFL. You obviously haven’t spent much time in Texas, particulary the Eastern half that gets all of the rain
What about Kalifornia we have lots of big bugs and snakes as well.

I personally have found most folks from Texas to be more friendly, less materialistic and mellow that the so called native Californians and east coast transplants to San Diego and California.
I will have to see what San Antonio and Austin are like in Texas. Dallas is ok but a big city and major traffic. I have time on my lease to travel and check it out. Much cheaper than California!!! The spiders and bugs worry me but we have bugs in California too.
mixxalotParticipantGold and Silver as a hedge against deflation or inflation
Is good to add to a portfolio for diversification. While, I would not put all of my funds in gold, it does not hurt to add some to a gold or precious metals mutual fund or ETF for retirement. I do collect some gold and silver coins as a hobby and must say that Morgan Silver dollars are beautiful coins!

But seriously explain to her that with the thousands of dollars you would save by waiting to buy for a few years, it will pay for her taste in expensive shoes, handbags and vacations that women seem to demand these days from overworked men. Thats my take. I would be kind but firm and say
“Uh, honey, I understand you want a home but lets just wait a short while ok? Then with the money we save it will buy a nicer place and lots of things.”
Why is it that so many people lack basic financial common sense?
August 30, 2007 at 3:11 PM in reply to: Why is Texas dirt cheap compared to California for real estate? #82627mixxalotParticipantOroville is 90 miles north of Sacramento and much less expensive. Sacramento is inflated market.
August 30, 2007 at 2:28 PM in reply to: Why is Texas dirt cheap compared to California for real estate? #82618mixxalotParticipantTime will tell
Where I end up. My family lives up north so I might just buy a home on a couple of acres for 200k which is possible in Oroville and still be close to airport and like. I love the weather in San Diego but to buy a home will be impossible unless the market drops by 2012. I have 2 years on my lease because I didnt want my rent to go up. My rent is cheaper than what others pay. Heck I know the new neighbors pay almost 1400/month while I pay 1100. So its not that bad and I can walk to the beach and enjoy it.
mixxalotParticipantPlanning is key to success
I am maxxing out my 401k, and plan to a ROTH IRA and invest the balance after bills in CD, money market and liquid assets until real estate drops more in San Diego. I may even buy in Texas after my lease is up in end of 2009 but just depends on what happens in San Diego.
August 29, 2007 at 10:42 PM in reply to: Why is Texas dirt cheap compared to California for real estate? #82525mixxalotParticipantDallas has the most tech jobs but the worst traffic. Austin has the best culture and night life but more expensive and fewer tech or business jobs. But also good colleges and universities. For me, I can live anyplace with an airport. I like the Austin mix the best. BUT Dallas has more business opportunities.
August 29, 2007 at 7:07 PM in reply to: Why is Texas dirt cheap compared to California for real estate? #82495mixxalotParticipantJobs and Real Estate
Considering that there are just as many tech jobs in Austin and Dallas as San Diego the real estate makes sense for Texas considering salaries as same. SO.. if prices drop in San Diego over next 1-2 years then I will buy in San Diego… otherwise Texas looks like the best bet for my dollars.
