Participant“It’s all the stuff the guys on this forum hate: travertine, stainless, granite, wood floors”
I don’t know about that broad characterization. I have a 50 year old house with the original oak hardwood floors–I love them–other than the fact that they really need to be refinished.
I’m in the middle of a minor remodel as well: I’m replacing all the interior doors/jambs/casings and baseboards in my house and repainting everything.
The carpentry work is now done and painting is in progress.
I like a nice house as much as the next person…but then I’m paying for this remodel with CASH out of my savings account, not a HELOC or a cash out refi that is rolled into my mortgage so I’m VERY AWARE how much everything costs and have spent 6 months trying to find a contractor who wasn’t trying to retire on my job.

ParticipantAre you planning on marrying up or something Marion?
What’s going in my next house? Whatever I can actually afford. I actually find much of the travertine tile I see installed in mcmansions very gauche. Small areas tastefully done is one thing. Covering a bath from floor to ceiling in it usually looks horrible.
Fancy fixtures, fancy flooring, fancy cabinets and countertops….when you are paying cash out of your bank account for these kinds of upgrades you may feel different about them than when they are rolled up into the price of the house and only cause a small monthly ‘pinch’.

ParticipantI find it amusing that most of the people who want to tax wealth don’t have any, just like most of the people who want to eliminate prop 13 don’t actually own property.
