Participant
How about a brand new condo in a good area for that price? It doesn’t have to be a SFR.
That is a more reasonable expectation. I think you’ll see certainly 2/2 and maybe 3/2, 3/3 condos in nice parts of town for under $300k in the next few years as the market unwinds. Under $200k…maybe…but probably not for NEW construction.

Any reason why Linux won’t do? I have been using it on and off for 10 years. Never had a crash, not once.
I’ve been using Ubuntu at home and at work (I write enterprise/mobile software) for going on 2 years and I don’t miss windows at all.
For the rare occasions that I need to use something in Windows that absolutely is not available in Linux, I have a windows xp virtual machine that I can startup.
As to the photoshop issue, unless you are a professional photoshop guru, I’d bet that Gimp will do 100% of what you do in photoshop. I’ve used Gimp to do a ton of photo editing as well as to create custom UI widgets for websites–it is VERY powerful and under appreciated.

Participant
SD, and the rest of you, my lease here isn’t up until 7 more months. What are the chances of me finding a brand new house in the 200-300k area in the next year or next couple of years in a decent area in San Diego?
I would prefer something new where I won’t have to replace carpets and what not. Is new construction possible in the price range I’m looking in?
New construction…for a SFR….for under $300k? I’d say NFW unless you find a smoking deal in one of the corners of the county (vista/san marcos, chula juana or el cajon).

Is clairmont a good area to live in? I have a friend who rents a house there for $1600 a month, not anything I’d live in (kinda run down) but the street is very peaceful.
There are good areas of Clairmont and there are definitely bad areas of Clairmont. I have several friends who live up there and they’ve noticed quite an increase in crime over the last 10 years. Most of the nicer areas of Clairmont have historically been the “Mt’s”: streets such as Mt. Alifan.
For that much money, you could probably rent a house in Grantville/Allied Gardens (the neighborhood that I live in). It is much more consistent than Clairmont.
