Does it stand to reason that being in manufacturing is a wise move for Americans as employees right now – vs services? If we will not be consuming as much – due to less spending money – then the service industries like the airlines (in addition to from high gas prices) will certainly take a hit. Same for hotels, restaurants, etc. Just writing off the top of my head here… My husband has been offered a job in aerospace manufacturing (he would have to leave service industry) and maybe it is a wise move. Any opinions?
lostkittyParticipantSdrealtor – If I remember correctly you said you had friends who attended. Surely you’ve already gotten the scoop from them. What is your take on the report? You said they seemed to do a 180 – could you elaborate?
lostkittyParticipantI agree wtih most of what you say Bugs. With that much money to spend – look elsewhere. There are some wonderful neighborhoods with even better schools in Del Mar, Poway, Solana Beach, olde LaJolla, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe. Location location location – as they say…. With CA schools being in the lowest three in the nation just above LA and MS, and with $2M to spend on a home….. i would not settle for elementary schools in the top tenth percentile for the state. I would go for the top 2. I’d take a long hard look at the junior and senior high schools as well.
I disagree about the schools being what you make of them. You can try and try and try to help your children through classes, but if their teachers do not have a firm grasp of the subjects, the curriculum demands little from the kids, equipment for labs, etc is inadequate and constantly being cut back, or the more advanced topics are not even offered… then what?
There are many many people leaving CA because of the schools alone (we are one such family). I was appalled at the continual “changes” in my kids schools each year due to budget cuts. How can you take away music and art? Science labs on the cheap?
lostkittyParticipantAnd yet more… this news would pertain to the southernmost portion of RightSide’s real estate shopping:

Just scroll down to page 5 and start reading there…
PS found my kitty and need to change my screen name…
lostkittyParticipantKey words “in California”. Look at the national level.
lostkittyParticipantIf I am wrong sdrealtor… gomen nasai….
lostkittyParticipantI am having the same feelings about RightSide’s post. If money is not a factor, and he wants a “family neighborhood with kids on tricycles”… then why on earth would he pick Carlsbad/Encinitas? Maybe he is so wealthy that his children can attend private school? – Sitting in traffic for hours just trying to get south to all of the good ones… – Maybe family lives nearby (which i doubt since he was asking us about neighborhoods). The public schools up in that region pretty much suck – let’s face it. If money is not an object he would seek a good school district at least. I am thinking this is sdrealtor trying to prove his point about there being lots of money out there for whom the high prices of homes are no object.

lostkittyParticipantNo kidding! – How about the comment he made about me making bad choices in realtors in the past. How did he come to that conclusion? I did not say anything like that. As a matter of fact, I rejected those who gave the slimey advice for exactly that reason – bad advice. No mistakes made here.. I am careful in my decision-making. SDR is pretty nasty towards the women on this board in particular… Whatever. Doesnt bother me. I’ve met his kind before, and am just happy I didnt marry anyone so volatile. He certainly must have known his views would be the minority on this board, so I welcome his comments, and tolerate his occasional slide into his rude manly-man thing. He often pops up with something interesting to say – and I think that is a benefit to the board. i just dont want to hear his unsolicited opinions of me. I didnt ask for his evaluation.
lostkittyParticipantActually, for me, my way has worked to my benefit since the low level reminds me to make decisions based on amount of gas necessary. I dont have to drive much – and do not ever get stuck in traffic like you do in SDiego. I’ve actually been spending a lot less money per month on gas since I’ve instituted this method – even as prices have sky-rocketed. I am much less wasteful. You do it your way, I’ll do it mine.
lostkittyParticipantI am doing the same as your bartender example, I just wont put in any more than $30 even though my vehicle holds much more. I find that I actually do not fill up more often, but rather watch the gas level closely, and make decisions to pair up errands with other trips to get things in one area done all at once. Even if it means that the library book is one day overdue -a .10cent fine, I wait until i am doing something else nearby.
I think it is all psychlogical. I think people are already frustrated by the insidious rise in the price of EVERYTHING the past few years not in sync with normal inflation… first healthcare, then water, then gas & electric, next mortgages…now gasoline… The increases have been quite shocking…
Sometimes it takes awhile to feel it when you are getting screwed from so many different angles (while the corporations/CEO’s CFO’s, continue to post record profits/incomes – except the airlines – but that’s another story we have suffered through personally – nightmare is a better word for it…).
lostkittyParticipantOh my… I know that guy Hall from high school. He’s been after a quick buck since way back then. First it was cell phones I think, and his license plate even said something along the lines of “Young Tycoon” or young Trump or something… (obviously it wasnt exactly that – too long, but something like that).
lostkittyParticipantIt is going to be really difficult for a lot of people. Quite sad actually.
Thanks for the info sdrealtor.
