I do not mean to be picky especially since the number you quote here comes from CAR, but the cost per pupil at SDUSD is not $9846 per student. If you read into the way that the data is presented in the website CAR used, only the most direct costs are used to calculate that figure. This is like someone saying that the $1,000,000 house they bought with 0 down only costs $600 per month because all they are counting are the utility bills.A number that is equally valid (and equally incorrect) is $1,900,000,000(the 2013/14 budget)/135000 students = $14,075 per student. And this number is probably closer to the truth.
My main point is that when someone brings data to a discussion (CAR) please bring honest data.
lookingagainParticipantI would also recommend PQ canyon as a place for your first ride, just stay on the south side of the creek, as there are some tricky parts on the north side trail.
I also would recommend North of the Border Bikes the have a few rental bikes, and both Mike and Doug are very knowledgable guys who have been mountain biking for decades. They are also having a Demo Day this Saturday where Marin BIkes will have a large demo fleet of bikes that you can try out for free.

I think CV is driven by the massive medical complex surrounding UCSD. QCOM engineers and even the mid level managers aren’t making the $200-250K it takes to buy in CV. MM is probably more reliant on QCOM health than CV.[/quote]
I’m not so sure this is true. I live in CV and of my 10 closest neighbors 4 work for Qualcomm. This includes the family that just bought the house across the street

Which means that a bicycle can use the entire lane anytime they feel that they need to. With the exception of the “bicycle rights advocates” that want to ride in the middle of the street just to piss motorists off, most cyclists will stay to the right as long as it is safe for them to do so.

lookingagainParticipantI must agree with sdrealtor here. My daughter is in the public school system in CV and I am amazed by just how bright and hardworking all the children are. It has nothing to do with ethnicity and everything to do with the fact that the children all come from highly educated households with very involved parents.
lookingagainParticipantI’d like to take this opportunity to vent on one of my latest RE transactions. Last year my wife and I put a offer on a short sale (we ended up buying the place). We put in an offer of 925K for the house and there were three loans on the property, the first with B of A and two others with a second bank. I should have known that there would be problems as the home had fallen out of escrow three times IIRC.
After three months, the sellers realtor gets back to us and says that B of A is countering at 934K for the home. When we sit down to go over the transaction, I notice that B of A is getting 898K there is 27K going to the bank holding the second and third and 9K as a “refund to the seller”. When I ask what this refund was, she said not to worry about it and it was always in the contracts. I said no it is not, to which she replied that she is the agent and knows better than I what is in real estate contracts. She goes on to “explain” that since this is not the official accounting (what ever that form is called) they just lump all the expected costs into one line item and that these costs are going to be paid by B of A.
(all this time our agent is doing everything she can to control her anger)
Knowing that something was amiss, I asked to see all the correspondence between her and the banks. At first she said that it was impossible because all the electronic communication (e-mail and the banks short sale system) is deleted as soon it is closed after she reads it. I tell her BS, and the next day I get a whole bunch of electronic communications between her and the banks. It took me about 15 minutes to find out that at the time she submitted our offer to B of A, she told the holder of the other two notes that they will get 36K (the amount they settled for in the last attempt but still about 6% of what they are owed). When B of A finally got back to her, they had accepted our offer and were going to pay the other bank 27K.
AFTER hearing from B of A (based on the e-mail time stamps) she sent an e-mail to the other bank with “Great news”, B of A as agreed to give them the 36K for the loans, knowing full well this was not true. Her plan was to try to hide the extra 9K as some sort of fees or something that we would have to pay for.
We called her on this, and said that she has lied to us, our realtor and the banks involved with this transaction. She got very indignant and stated that she has never done anything unethical in her life, and that we were not smart enough to understand how real estate transactions work. She went on and on about how complicated these things are and how you can’t just “add up the numbers” in the transactions so we had just better do what she says since she knows best.
Well, we wanted the house and our agent suggested that we just split the 9K three ways. So that is what we did and I just kept quiet as possible for the rest of the transaction.
The Worst part is that she now lives three houses away from us!
I know that there are good, honest realtors out there (ours has always done a great job for us) but it is incompetent and dishonest prople like this that give the whole profession it’s bad reputation.

lookingagainParticipantIf I may hijack this thread, I also have an easement question. The question is who can benefit from an easement. In this particular case, I owned a house with an easement covering the back ten feet of the lot for utility purposes (SDGE and the county for possible future electrical and/or sewer uses and written specifically in that way). My neighbor at the time used this strip for access to her yard but after many years of gophers and erosion the strip became pretty much impassable. So my neighbor came to me and demanded that I build a retaining wall and back fill so that she could park her pickup in her back yard. She said that an easement is an easement and I was legally responsible for keeping it in useable condition for anyone ( she stated “I’m a realtor so I know”). I countered that the easement was only for utility companies and that she could take a flying leap. She kept up with it for about a year, demanding that I fix it and threatening to sue me to force repairs. She even went behind my back to my insurance company to get them to fix it. They also told her to where she could stick her claim…
Anyway, while I think she had no claim, was I correct? Are easements specific to what is written in the title (or wherever it is written)? Or was she correct in saying that I had a legal obligation to keep it passable for any and all people who want to use it.
It does not really matter now, as I sold the house a few years back, but I am sure that she was pestering the new owners about it as soon as they moved in.

lookingagainParticipantI must apologize flu. I was not trying to call you out for thinking your child is exceptional, I was just amazed at how advanced so many of the children at my daughters kindergarten are.
I kept hearing from my daughters pre-k teachers how advanced she is, especially for her age (she just made the age cut-off for this year). Now that I am meeting all her new classmates and their parents I am seeing that most of the kids are all at the same level. Maybe in CV advanced is the “new average.” 😉
For my part I have always thought of my daughter as pretty normal with her own personal strengths and weaknesses.

lookingagainParticipantI would have to agree with zk, and wonder if you are being a bit reactionary flu. My daughter also started kindergarten this week, probably at the same school as your daughter. While I have encountered a few difficult situations overall I have been impressed by the behavior of the children I have witnessed. It is much better than what I see at the adjoining park during evenings and weekends. As far as the sucking up, what I see is parents with the second or third child with the same teacher so of course they will be friendly! Just relax, things will work out.
And by the way, just about everyone I know with a kindergartener at that school reads and writes at first grade level and is bilingual so really our kids are just averagelookingagainParticipantI would have to agree with zk, and wonder if you are being a bit reactionary flu. Well, I cannot compare the size and scope of this project to others since I know nothing about it, but to answer part of your question there are at least two quarries that I know of in the middle of San Diego. One north of Friars Road just east of Fashion Valley, and a second in the valley that separates Mira Mesa from Miramar This one has to be at least 3 sq. mi. in area). There may be others as well, but these two do not appear to make too much of an impact on the surrounding area.
