Yeah, unfortunately we’ve all become so used to cigarette butts, we no longer see them. But, next time you’re walking on the sidewalk, look down at the gutter, you’ll see tons of butts (especially outside of bars and restaurants). All of them wash down the storm drains, out to sea, and straight up onto our beaches.
lindismithParticipantYes, good to put a face to the user name, JG – and others!
JG, your son is so polite! Nice job!
Nice to see a few lurkers there too! You guys better start posting – you know who you are!
We’ll have another one next quarter.
lindismithParticipantL Thek,
do you know those stats from beach clean-ups that you do?November 18, 2006 at 1:47 PM in reply to: Should personal net worth include your primary residence? #40274lindismithParticipantI agree with FormerSD.
I liked this sentence from the initial post:
It is no surprise that the couples that needed the equity in their home to qualify said yes and the rest said no.This is addressed somewhat in the KPBS thread, when interviewing Case. Apparently, when home values rise, people spend more money. We are all aware of this on Piggington, but what I didn’t know was that when values are on their way down, spending does not diminish.
So, I guess I answered my own question in the Fashion Valley thread: people are spending because psychologically they still think they are wealthy. And to some extent they are. I mean, the worst is yet to come, no?
lindismithParticipantMaybe it’s all the renters that can still afford to shop? What % of SD rents vs. owns?
My brother-in-law (bankruptcy attorney) says he is seeing a lot of people who are about to foreclose. The first thing he tells them is to stop paying their house payment (since it’s going to happen anyway.) So, maybe even people who are going to foreclose are still shopping? We do live in a culture that thinks shopping brings happiness.
Are other malls just as packed? Or is just FV?
All the cars in the lots seemed all shiny and new too.
lindismithParticipantbetter yet, just make the butts biodegradable. Suing for that might be more plausible.
Smokers are never going to stop littering.did you know cigarette butts are the number 1 litter item on the world’s beaches?
Surfrider San Diego has a Hold On To Your Butt program that we rolled out in OB. We raised money, paid for public cigarette ashcans, and installed them up and down the main streets outside of bars and restaurants. People are using them. We do not yet know what the impact is on the beaches, however in LA when those chapters did it, there was a 40% decrease in butt litter. We just installed them here in August.
We’re looking to roll out the program to other cities. (Del Mar already did them on their own through their own city activists program.) So far we’ve had the most interest from Encinitas.
If anyone would like to help us roll it out in their city, let me know.
BTW, we’re not against smoking. We just want people to hold on to their butts.
As for the second-hand smoke, it’s disgusting, but then so are exhaust fumes, sewage spills etc etc. Maybe we all just have to live with these pollutants? You know, maybe it’s part of life, and we all need to get over it?
lindismithParticipantYeah, I think last time we had close to 30 people… but can’t remember.
It will be getting dark by 5:30. The restaurant’s location is the far end of the parking lot. When you turn in, it is all the way over on the left.

If you get lost, call (760)753 6425 and the restaurant can give you directions. I doubt anyone will because it is so easy to find, but just in case.lindismithParticipantNo, but my brother-in-law who is a bankruptcy attorney has quite a few foreclosure stories. If you are interested let me know, and I will email you his contact info.
Great work Kelly, btw!
lindismithParticipantYes we are!
See everyone tomorrow.
I will try to find my, ‘hello, my name is’ stickers… I think they are still in my trunk, from last time….
lindismithParticipantBgates was trying to pass himself off as bgates. (Either that or bgates was very drunk, and couldn’t remember his login, so created a new one.) I think it was just a poser though.
bgates, despite his incorrect views, is very articulate, bright and a good speller. This other Bgates was just a nightmare.
lindismithParticipantcute! (inversion!)
I think we’re going to see more and more and more of this. On one hand it means more places to live for us renters, but what does it mean to the selling market?
lindismithParticipantPC, can you search for those terms on Zip?
lindismithParticipantwow! Thanks for the update, sdrealtor.
My brother-in-law who is a bankruptcy attorney is seeing a lot of people with foreclosures looming. In almost every case they have done everything to hang onto their home. One couple was making their payments, and buying their groceries and gas on credit cards. It simply became too much for them. They are now going to stop making their house payments and find someplace else to live.
He says most of his clients have some combination of lost job, or sickness that results in income problems. A lot of them have simply overspent, but I was surprised by how many that were sick, and had no savings.

Michael, great letter! Just curious if you got a reply?
