ParticipantHere in LA, Sr. Java developers with 10+ yrs experience, W2 contract rate is around $45-50/hr nowadays (it used to be $75-80/hr just a few years ago so it’s dropped over 40%!!)…that is with NO benefits whatsoever. Too many H1b visa candidates who are desperate and will accept anything so contract rates are low. Perm jobs on the other hand are around 110-115k because for perm it’s a big hassel to hire H1b candidates… and usually perm jobs require residency or citizenship.
H1b candidates exploit a hole in the system by allowing a middleman to hold their visa so the contracting company doesn’t have to deal with the visa issues of proving that an American is not available etc. This is technically illegal but most I know work this way, the immigration system is totally broken and there is no enforcement of these violations. It really hurts the American IT workers big time.
perm jobs are few and far between now, mostly low rate contracts π

By the way, that is bullcrap about being career suicide.
I’m thinking people see how little vacation time companies give and how they absolutely frown people taking anything more than 2 weeks at a time off.
I am current with the latest technologies in my line and I intend to follow IT developments closely even when I am away..thanks to the internet π Software Engineering is my first love and I am a superfast learner so I have no issues catching up.
I just have issues with employers who do not use logic to make decisions. Just having a gap on your Resume doesn’t make one unemployable. If I can pass a skills test (which most employers have anyways) then what difference does it make even if I took 2 yrs off? It’s just narrow minded…

Wow, nice! Go for it-it will be great experience.
thanks, probably will. I’ve been on the fence about this because of some people who told me I am nuts and it’s craziness and career suicide to take these types of breaks. It’s encouraging to note that others have done this as well…the way some people talk one would imagine this type of thing is unheard of.
