we probably would have put an offer in on this one if I knew it would go for 364k when it was listed at 455k. Freaking awesome! Who wouldn’t want to live on a boulder. If the kid doesn’t make it to his 6th birthday, it is his fault.
I do hope this trend continues so that I can come happily back, instead of begrudgingly!

I wonder if the bones were good for that price, but man it is sweet!Our contemplated range was more like ~400k depending on it need of repair, and 20% down was pretty feasible. So it was possible to live in that second category and buy a little 3/2 fixer. But at the end of the day I would never feel good about spending that much money on a mortgage for a home that was…meh.
We were never really very serious in our thinking about LM or AG The traffic on the 8 blows, and it just didn’t have a good feel (whatever that means).
It just seems like in other places that I have lived and visited, I just got that good feel (the one that says, “yeah, I could live here”) for half the money. And paying twice what feels right is never going to work, unless helicopter Ben drops off a sack of money. In which case, Point Loma here I come.

Totally agree with your sentiment about the rhythms of the neighborhood. When we were looking for a rental in S/N Park, I was amazed at the difference a block makes.

California. Its still twice as expensive as a similarly demographic neighborhood in Minneapolis (which is not a cheap house market by US standards btw).

jstoesz, if you don’t mind my asking, what other areas in SD County did you consider purchasing in besides La Mesa before you guys decided to relocate instead? And what was/is your price range?? And by chance, were your desired terms FHA or VA?

– Mission hills
– Mt Helix (not walkable but really cool homes and neighborhood)out of reach (safe and kind of old and mostly walkable)
– University Heights
– Normal Heights
– Clairemont
– Bay ParkCrap but in my price range.
