Besides PHOT what other weed stocks are there?
There’s MJNA but it seems dicey. What about companies that make supplies like grow lamps, etc.? Amusingly enough, there’s POT, which is only tangentially related.
jeff303ParticipantBanking regulations still need to be updated so that legal pot businesses can open bank accounts and accept credit card payments. Until this happens, I think it might be too risky from an investment perspective.

Most animal shelters have volunteers who do this sort of thing, for a variety of reasons.

You’re right it won’t happen – the state assembly in California and the governor work exclusively for public employee unions/CTA. In fact, the CTA LITERALLY writes laws for themselves and then selects a state senator that WILL introduce and pass the measure.
Interesting, sounds a lot like ALEC.
jeff303ParticipantWell looks like we just saw a major crash, almost 50% down overnight on news that a Chinese exchange would stop accepting new yuan deposits. Seems like the large reaction from just one exchange – especially considering they’re still doing withdrawals – is a sign of volatility.
jeff303ParticipantWait… did OP lift this scenario from an episode of Family Guy? My wife and I are watching old episodes on Netflix and we just happened to play one that literally had this plot in it.

The NIH is supposed to pursue therapeutics that are needed but not commercially justifiable. I wouldn’t say capitalism is the problem – its the failure of government agencies to do what they are supposed to do.
The NIH’s stated mission is here, in case anyone is curious: http://www.nih.gov/about/mission.htm
I find the notion that they haven’t “cured cancer” yet as evidence of their “failure” to be laughable if not outrageous. Even the idea of a “cure for cancer” is a naive fantasy, perhaps as best expressed by this comic: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=1162
There are armies of highly intelligent and motivated individuals working on it, and moreover, there is a crystal clear profit motive. So no, I don’t think we can chalk this one up to failure on the part of the NIH, but rather as evidence of the complexity of the universe and the difficulty of the problem at hand.
jeff303ParticipantI think TNC nailed it, as he usually does. http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/11/from-super-predators-to-the-knockout-game/281875/

Bitcoin is no different than me printing up a finite supply of livinincali bucks. Are you going to take livinincali bucks as payment for your goods or services. You’ll likely only do so if many people in your network of goods and services suppliers do so as well. Bitcoin is intrinsically worthless, and will likely go the way of many pyramid schemes eventually. If you got into bit coin back in 2009, 2010 now would be the time to cash in to the new suckers that are going to find these things out as the worthless security certs they are. You’re better off buying bottles of whiskey than bit coins.
They are quite different, actually. Instant, essentially free transactions to anyone around the world, that are anonymous but verifiable by anyone. You can’t tell me with a straight face that’s the same as printed currency.
Granted, there is still the issue of acceptance for goods/services, but that has been gradually changing and will likely continue to in the near future.
jeff303Participant
I call bubble. When it’ll pop, who knows, but it’s definitely not sustainable. At this rate, it’s definitely profitable to just start farming your own bitcoin.
It’s extremely difficult to make money farming, unless you are willing to invest tons of time and money into specialized, low power equipment. It’s probably far easier to make money by building and selling specialized “bitcoin farming” computers, given the current hype.
November 14, 2013 at 7:00 AM in reply to: OT: The “Radical” Gay Agenda in California Public Schools #767851jeff303ParticipantThis entire concern is predicated on a false assumption, namely that sexual orientation is something consciously “chosen” or subconsciously “adopted” based on society. All current scientific evidence points to it being biological and set from birth.
jeff303Participant
But it does make me wonder. If someone is at/near the threshold. Let’s say they earned exatly $450k instead of $449k, their entire capital gains is taxed 5% more than if they earned an $1000 less…. If that’s the case, lol……Ouch…
So you’re suggesting this higher rate may not be marginal? That would just make no sense at all, but I tried searching and couldn’t find anything to confirm or refute that notion.
jeff303ParticipantIn Washington state, it’s already $9.19.
