Percentages have a place but it would be good to see the actual numbers too, if you please.HobieParticipant
2020 Coronavirus
Earliest Reported US Infection: Jan 21, 2020
First Death in US: Feb 29, 2020
US Deaths as of March 13, 2020: 48
US Deaths as of Sept 3, 2020: UNKNOWN
Tell ya what. You report back with the Sept 3, 2020 and we’ll compare who is gloom and doom and who is a realist. Deal?
HobieParticipantC-mon svelt. Contagious vs. individual medical issue(non-contagious).
Nice try 😉 I expect far better from you. You are quite smart friend.
HobieParticipantGreat idea to test. Hmm this is new, so nothing on the shelf.
https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2020/03/13/hhs-funds-development-covid-19-diagnostic-tests.html
“There are currently no approved diagnostics, vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, the FDA issued emergency use authorization for diagnostic tests from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other authorized public health laboratories, and for use of New York State’s Wadsworth diagnostics test. In addition, FDA also issued a new policy Feb. 29 to help expedite the availability of diagnostics.”
Keep in mind the mortality rate vs. panic. Just sayin’
repeat after me: orange man bad
HobieParticipant
During these challenging times, I’m really concerned that people are going to get confused with the negative connotations being thrown around here in each thread with the word “flu” that looks and sounds the same as my user handle.
To avoid further confusion, I’ve rebranded my user handle to something else that clearly distinguishes me from the negative associations being used here to represent a deadly virus.
Damn, you are right. Can’t figure out what kind of ‘oginist I am….
fluoginist????
HobieParticipant
Imagine what the numbers would be like if the coronavirus was allowed to spread and proliferate freely like the flu is
We don’t just let the flu run unabated. We have flu vaccines each year. This is new virus.
Svelt: Do this justify a panic? Closing schools, frantic hording? That is the point– flu is more deadly today vs. coronavirus today.
HobieParticipantI was hoping you were not going to Orange Man bad.
Well then, you said, ” ..Telling people to not to panic without any substance to back it up..”
Here is the offical CDC recommendations on mitigation:
“When a novel virus with pandemic potential emerges, nonpharmaceutical interventions, which will be called community mitigation strategies in this document, often are the most readily available interventions to help slow transmission of the virus in communities.”https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/community-mitigation-strategy.pdf
Basically it says: if you are sick, stay home. Wash hands a lot. Don’t be stupid. And it doesn’t say to run to doctor and get a test. Remember most recover from it and don’e die.
Press and Dems complaining lack of test kits, etc. are designed to make orange man look bad. c-mon. You could use the same argument on any new pandemic virus. It’s new and takes some time to sort it out.
Air travel was stopped rather quickly if I recall.
HobieParticipantitsdd: keep in mind people were dying from the flu. Not so much re coronavirus. Transmission rates vs. actual mortality are not same. This is my point re press jumping on the ‘pandemic’ phrase and getting everyone panicked running out to by toilet paper and bottled water.
Including all the emails from every company you have ever done business with stating they are using every precaution, bla… bla… Ever see this before??
You may find this interesting:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html#epi-curveThen compare to current flu stats:
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm41 Corona deaths vs. 22K-55k flu deaths
So, again is closing schools really necessary? One might argue for flu exposure, but not coronavirus.
And remember, there are no reported coronavirus infections among any students to date.
HobieParticipantzk: you are too smart to be drinking the koolaid.
Back in 2009 the swine flu now called H1N1 was the epidemic virus. It appears every year from then on.
Some reading:
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.htmlThe difference is the press response and the resulting public frenzy.
Something to think about.
HobieParticipantClosing schools and cancelling school sports, performances, and other activities in light of no students currently infected seems a bit overkill. IMHO
But the schools have to ‘do something’ in response to the riled up parents caused by the media.
The terms epidemic and pandemic are scary words that are being thrown around by the press to inflame people who don’t know the words exact meaning.
Definitions: An outbreak is a sudden rise in cases of a disease in a particular place. An epidemic is a large outbreak. A pandemic means a global epidemic.
It doesn’t specifically speak to the deadliness of a particular disease, just the rate of spread in a population.
From the Calif Dept of Education:
“California law authorizes the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI) to provide credit for instructional time in the case of a schoolwide closure based on a declaration of an epidemic made by a local public health officer. However, closing a school simply as a precaution may result in a LEA not qualifying for a J-13A waiver and a penalty for failure to offer the statutorily required instructional days and/or minutes.”https://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/el/le/yr20ltr0305att.asp
So with funds secured, school districts can now ‘do something’, which is close for a couple of weeks.
HobieParticipant
..didn’t say what would spark it, and he didn’t have to.
Wouldn’t that be just a 50/50 probability? Soothsayers have to be better than a coin toss.
HobieParticipantWaiting for some company to ‘certify’ that your facility is not harboring the virus. Business opportunity!
Pay them to test HVAC system, random public areas at the workplace, hotel, conference center, etc.
HobieParticipanttoo bad gzz. Hopefully the Kimberly Clark will pull everything up now.
HobieParticipantI’m just waiting for you to complete the 2 week deal in Joshua.. return, scream out” f-this” , order a 16oz porterhouse and a scotch and say.. been there done that!! Go for it scaredy!
Actually more power to you, as I could never do that retreat!!
