ParticipantHere’s another wrinkle in our situation. Guido (my husband) never got a copy of our 18 month lease back from the landlord. He’s asked probably five times since we moved in. We have no idea what’s going on with this guy. It’s so weird, he fixed the pool and put in crown molding and painted the house just a few months ago. Why would he do all that and then stop paying the mortgage? And why would he not give us a copy of the lease? We knew this was a sketchy situation going in because the landlord is such a huge flake. We were figuring that something like this might happen, but we liked the house so much we thought we’d chance it. Where are we legally with no copy of the lease?

ParticipantSo far there’s been no hassel whatsoever. The landlord (a contractor) was just by to fix smething last week, so I don’t think he’s abandoning us (that could change, of course). From what I understand, we are entitled to stay here for the full duration of our 18 month lease.

ParticipantThanks for the advice. The landlord is trying to claim this house as his primary residence so he never changed his mailing address, which is how we ended up finding out about this. We never did pay a deposit(probably because the landlord knew this was going to happen). If we were going to ask for a reduction in our rent- how much should we ask for? What should we do if he won’t work with us?

ParticipantI cannot see paying that price for a bunch of houses that all look alike. And mello-roos is such a rip-off. You’ll never get that money back.
