I have to admit my tastes as of late have been veering into “heavier” metal, such as All Shall Perish, Crowbar and Meshuggah. I’ve continued to listen to the Misfits, but I haven’t heard anything interesting from that front in a while. Some of the more offbeat Industrial stuff is good (like Front 242 and Skinny Puppy), but Ministry seems to have put it into the ditch as of late.
The latest NIN is good, and the latest Metallica is passable, but you have to stray pretty far out of the lines to hear anything original anymore. You mention commercialization and I think the music industry has pretty well killed originality or at least “American Idol-ized” it (meaning, they’ve reduced it to insipid, easily packaged pap like Carrie Underwood).
Sorry. Didn’t mean to get off on a rant there. And, yeah, I’ve seen Black Flag in concert. Saw them up in San Francisco. Great show – the part of it I can remember. =)
You’re right- there is nothing new or original.
What I think is funny is that kids are still listening to the same bands that I was when I was a kid. I see teenagers walking around with Bad Religion shirts and Suicidal Tendencies shirts all the time. My niece just went to see the Damned. Those guys must be ancient- I saw them like 25 years ago when I was a teenager. They can’t possibly be that menacing looking now.fredo4

I thought it was a youtube prank! These ppl actually exist?! Wow! For Shame… You know these two should make real money in telvanglism or christian music sector. He completely reminds me of… whats his name… Bill Olestien (?). With a less hot wife.
For the Record… Ginn over Rollins any and everyday!

Yes they exist. And they have a bunch of other totally awesome commercials on their website- just google them if you want to see some more. They ran these commercials all the time on the local real estate channel in L.A. when we lived there. My husband and I were big fans and just a little bit star struck when we saw them at an open house one day.

Participant
Henry Rollins was a favorite of mine until I found out that he was an actor. I now doubt the sincerity of his music, Black Flag or Rollins Band. I wouldn’t agree that Husker Du was a copy of Black Flag. I still listen to the DK’s and a while back I enjoyed Cracker.
I’m talking about early Husker Du when I say they were similar to Black Flag. Their later more commercial stuff was completely different.

ParticipantI went out with Henry Rollin’s best friend Joe Cole a few times before he died (a few years later-I didn’t do it). Never met Henry though. I liked Rollins band too, but he lost me when he got into that spoken word stuff.
Allen- have you been to any shows lately and seen any good new bands? I’m so out of the loop now that I’m married with kids. The last time I was at a show was 2004 (I think?)- It was a black Flag reunion with Greg Ginn at the Palladium. Right before that I saw Gwar somewhere– If you haven’t seen them live you have to- they are hilarious. -
