I think we can all agree that it has always been a little sketchy, especially if you don’t know Spanish or have no experience there.
Something tells me that these kidnappers would not be impressed by an American speaking Spanish.
That family had a horrible experience and were lucky to get out alive, I feel for them. However, they were not being smart about their travels: (1) A new truck pulling a big “weekend warrior” trailer is like waving a sign saying “I have lots of money” (2) Driving at night is a big no-no.
In addition, the police know of this scam and it has been well published. If you are signalled to pull over on the road by an apparent police car at night with sirens and lights, the real police recommend you to find a well lit area with lots of people before you pull over (even if it is many miles).

I’ll be back to Ensenada next month to go fishing and back to Mexico again whenever a solid swell lines up with a weekend.
Is there more fish in Mexico?
Just curious what attracts you so frequently back to Mexico?
Yes, there are more fish in Mexico π
I am attracted mostly to the uncrowded surf but I think the fishing is better there too. Most of the longer range fishing charter boats out of SD head nearly due south from Point Loma. I prefer to drive (70mph) and sleep in a bed than do an overnight on a boat (15mph). I have had better luck (more fish) with the charters out Ensenada than out of SD.
Going to Mexico is not for everyone (apparently even less so for the Pigg population) but it can be a beautiful place. It makes think of what southern California must have been like way back when.
@ deadzone … I heard Salsi was letting surfers back in but I haven’t tried it since it was closed. Never caught the point good there, but had many fun sessions at the reef.

Participant@ deadzone … shhhh, we don’t want to make the surf in northern baja crowded again π
I have been to Mexico 4 times in the last 12 months. 3x for surfing at various locations and once to Ensenada for fishing. As deadzone said, safe as ever (which is not very) but a little common sense goes a long ways. Here are my Mexico rules:
1) drive only during the day
2) no stopping in TJ
3) older modest cars (preferably unwashed) are better
4) get insurance
5) gated and guarded parking only (you have to pay)I used to camp a lot between Rosarito and Ensenada when I was in still in school. Since about ’03 I have been staying in hotels/condos. There are lots of great deals, it is really deserted.
I know most of the scams and how to avoid them. The thing that amazes me is the people driving their $50k vehicle with $20k in toys in the trailer. No wonder they are a target, that is worth more than most Mexican families make in a decade.
I’ll be back to Ensenada next month to go fishing and back to Mexico again whenever a solid swell lines up with a weekend.
