Participant
If someone offers a “warranty” on a used item, run quickly in the other direction. 99% of the time, it’s a scam or bordering on such.
This is a different kind of “warranty”:
http://www.orhp.com/I never buy warranties for new or used items.

ParticipantI don’t know how long it took him to remove and re-install the timer; I was away from home. I was able to to stop by during my lunch break and chatted with the tech guy briefly, but then I had to run back to work. I found out about the $288 only when I got home at night. I think the whole process took him at least 3 hours, if not longer, but I suspect that most of the time was devoted to removing the old heater and installing the new one.
I’ll read the policy carefully…

ParticipantThe article’s author did a poor job of explaining the issue, and explaining the courts decision’s potential implications. She went for the sensationalist approach, I think.
Textbook publishers often have cheaper versions of their books for sale in developing countries that have identical contents, but sell for a fraction of what they do in the US. In this case, a Thai student bought and imported a large amount of these books from Thailand, then sold them via eBay, reportedly racking up $1.2 million (not clear whether that was gross sales or profit).
Even if the courts side with the publisher, the decision would have to do with circumventing regular distribution channels, and will have no effect whatsoever on any of us who occasionally buy or sell used stuff.

Participant
(1) Do not self measure. I repeat: Do not self measure. You’ll screw it up. If you’re going to pay for bespoke clothing make certain that the person or company making the clothing takes the measurements. These guys are up in LA so I’d recommend driving up one day and getting measured.
I agree. Something easier than driving to L.A., though, is to have a local tailor measure you. If you want to be double sure, you could have two local tailors measure you independently.

Participant
Is 4% that big of a deal to get you to buy INTC? QCOM is giving you 1.6%, MSFT is giving you 3%, CSCO is also giving you 3%. Is an additional 1-2% in dividend enough to swing you one way or the other. I personally buy tech for growth and not dividend. I have some dividend specific stock that gives you much more than 4%. AGNC is giving me 14.5% right now. I also have CEL, who’s currently giving me 11.5%. On top of that, I bought it when it was $6.xx, so I’m also up over 30%.
Cramer The Clown badmouthed CEL yesterday, and now the price is down… Interestingly, he endorsed AGNC, which continued its upward trend.

ParticipantDemise and collapse are too strong to describe a financial crisis. These countries average one of these crisis per decade… It’s routine. A government may “collapse” but a new administration is installed and then life goes on. The countries themselves don’t collapse, not even their economies do.

ParticipantA beautiful young actress died of pneumonia. What’s her name? She’s famous. Anyways, months later her young husband died too. Now the family is convinced that the house was the problem.

ParticipantCan someone explain to me where this silly idea of carpet in the bathroom comes from?
I bought a new house in Orange County back in 2001. The builder was Centex, and I was shocked to learn that the “list price” included carpet in the secondary bathroom. Carpet in the bathroom is like lining your fireplace with paper..
Two years ago, I took a prescription for glasses to LensCrafters in Mission Valley. All was going well. (…) Growing angry, I told him that I didn’t like the upsell, and stormed out. They must get one heck of a commission on polarized lenses to throw away what would have been a sale of almost $1,000 (two pairs of glasses).I ordered glasses from Zenni ( http://www.zennioptical.com/ ) for less than $90. Titanium wire rims, they were fairly easy to adjust. Quality of lenses was decent, and at least as good as LensCrafters.
ParticipantUndercoating, extended warranty, anti-theft registry, etc… are you buying your glasses from a car dealership?

Participant
I hope the landlord makes her whole for moving expense and refunds the security as well as the 1 week in Sept. without air.
The landlord sounds like a do****bag; I wouldn’t be surprised if he even threatens to keep the security deposit “for breaking the lease”. He may insist to be fully paid for the 1 week too. To get any money back, you need to sound like you are ready to take them to court and that you won’t be intimidated.

Participant

The problem is not so much the figure he gave, namely the 47%. The problem is that he said that the 47% have a victim mentality, believe are entitled to handouts, and take no personal responsibility.
There are relatively few poor people in America that bear no responsibility for their situation.
Exactly, relatively few poor people take no responsibility for their financial situation. That’s why Mitt’s 47% is so terribly wrong. 47% is virtually half of the population, which is far, far from few people. Most likely Mitt doesn’t believe that half of Americans don’t take responsibility for their situation. But he said so to pander to the rich donors he was addressing. That’s very dishonest and disqualifies him for high office, IMO. -
