ParticipantI never called anyone an idiot or a moron and I think the person who started this thread was out of line by saying, “Idiot SUV owners”. There are plenty of idiot non-SUV owners out there on the road.
I know because I see them picking their noses (no, your car is NOT a shield that renders you invisible to the naked eye), singing to the radio, and engaging in complete beauty makeovers in their rear view mirrors every day.
I dont have kids but if I did, I would want to teach them to be good stewards of this poor planet. Setting an example by driving an efficient, more eco-friendly car would be at the top of my list.
I applaud all efforts to compost, do organic gardening, recycle, etc. I cant wait to move into my new house so I can compost and raise worms. My personal goal is to reduce our amount of weekly trash by 50%.

ParticipantWow! Don’t Californians get testy when someone challenges/comments on their car choice. Yowza.
I have no problem, either, with people who own trucks because they need them. There are plenty of people here in Temecula who need to pull horse trailers, boats, or use trucks for farming.
What I take issue with is the big, shiny “status symbol” SUVs. The fancy Escalades and other “blingy” cars. When I’m doing 71 mph on I-15 – and those vehicle angrily pass me and give me a dirty look, I just smirk at them. They either have no clue as to how inefficiently they are driving and/or dont care.
I’m sorry – I dont buy the excuse that you “need” a huge vehicle for kids. It’s a “want” not a “need.” I have friends who have kids and live in Europe. Yes, Europe has better public transport options than SoCA does…but my friends’ kids play soccer, tennis, take cello lessons, etc and they seem to do just FINE without gas guzzling vehicles.
As I said earlier, we’ll see how much people love/need their SUVs when gas is $5.37/gallon.

ParticipantWell, I DO think that intelligence played at least some part in my success! I DID spend months researching zip codes, neighborhoods, etc. Things were booming and there was pretty limited condo inventory at that point (hard to believe, eh?)
But I made a list of what I wanted: within 3 miles of a beach, fireplace, double garage, patio(s), dual masters, a little bit of a fixer, and a stable, desirable area, good schools. I found an unloved, 3-level end-unit with an oversized garage, overlooking a lovely greenbelt. The place felt more like SFR than condo. Needed new kitchen counters, new carpet and a few other relatively minor fixes.
Two of my friends – successful 20+ year real estate investors – assured me that boom/bust cycles in real estate ARE a reality – despite those who thought the boom would go on forever. I’ve recently looked at the place on zillow and on the low-end of the value range it’s $285K. I’m so happy I got out when I did….
