If you are going by numbers alone on this payout you mights as well pretend you are going to get the money.
desmondParticipantI was never a big fan of JoePa, especially with the Sandusky thing, but you are way off if you are trying to say the guy was overpaid or did not deserve that pension payment. He was the biggest bargain in college sports considering his annual salary (compared to his peer coaches) and what he brought in to Penn State over his tenure:
“As background, the football program at Penn State brings in yearly revenue of close to $75 million, with more than $50 million of that in profit. It is the only sports program at the university that earns a profit according to Forbes magazine, with other departments losing approximately $30 million per year.
Penn State gets a bargain and obviously an old-timer’s discount by paying Joe Paterno a bit more than $1 million a year in salary. He’s never expressed an interest in holding out for more, threatening to leave or retire, until today”
btw, either they pay his family the big retirement package or get sued, basically it is hush money imo.

Just make sure not to become anti-pants.

desmondParticipantThat is really my thing too Jazz, I really should care less about CA RE, not going to buy in CA again, but it is the constant spin that RE is such a great investment (or now a place to live)no matter what happens.

My daughter graduated last Saturday so I am finished. We bit the bullet and sent our kids to private schools in Texas. I finished 8 years of private HS and 8 years of private College for my two kids. I got lucky on a couple of houses that made it easier to pay for but holy S I do not even want to know what we actually paid. I cannot imagine what people will do in the future paying for college. These colleges are like f- ing country clubs and just keep raising the green fees. In my mind I kept saying “thank you sir may I have another”.
Good for YOU, Desmond. TX is one of the states I have in mind to establish residency for my last kid. Unlike you, I didn’t “make a killing” on two houses and can’t pay for private HS, private college or out-of-state tuition.
I have relatives in three other states which could assist my kid with assimilation and getting a job to establish residency, if need be.
You seem to have sacrificed a lot for your kids (I take it you are renting now?) and I’m SURE you’re VERY glad to be done with it :=]
There our kids so I would not call it a sacrifice more like what we wanted to. My wife and I are not high profile, we shared one car for 3 years and hung out without going on any big vacations, etc. College is very stressful now for parents with the high costs, you worry your kid will flunk a course and then have to go another semester and all sorts of crap runs through your mind. The schools never take into consideration what you are paying and really don’t care. Get that residency and just do the best that you can without going BK or crazy!

desmondParticipantGreat posts on what people can see happening down the road in California. Instead of the “if you can’t hack it in Calfornia then move out”, intelligent people are weighing their options and are making smart financial decisions for a better future for themselves.

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/may/01/man-abandoned-dea-cell-steps-forward/
An engineering student stepped forward with his lawyer Tuesday to say he was left alone in a federal holding cell for five days with no food or water, apparently forgotten by the federal drug agents who detained him.
So I feel for this person and I wish that whoever did this gets what they deserve.
But really what connection does it have to the “war on drugs”? In theory you can be detained for any other offense and this still could happen to you!
After reading that by enron you can tell the “war on drugs” is not working.

Will this ever end with a workable solution to the “war on the average US citizen”
Actually the average citizens asked for it by supporting the war on drugs, zero tolerance and 3-strikes.
It’s not until they or their family members are caught in the system that they have second thoughts.
You are right on that. A good freind of mine was always defending the marajuana laws, until his kid got “busted” for smoking some pot. He admittingly has changed his mind. Once Pat Robertson agrees that marajuana should be legal you know the “war on marajuana” is a joke.

Sorry desmond, I’m hope it’s not personal. And it’s just my opinion. But to your point, CA isn’t exactly a cheap state here anymore either… Partly because of all the taxing and spending going on in our local government. It’s getting absurd… again imho.
Sorry for what? All I said was the California “laid back” lifestyle was gone. You proved my point and went overboard (not laid back) on some tangent that I did not really read. Surfs up………..
