Participant
Davelj nailed it and I’m gonna use that word. I’m not racist I just don’t want my kids hanging out with substantially lower class people. Culturist. I like that.
Although now that I think about it my kids have some pretty broke kind if lower class friends. Ah well.
And obviously this goes well beyond simplistic notions of “economic class” as well. To use an extreme example, you probably have more in common culturally with a taiwanese immigrant that came to to the US 30 years ago and stresses independence, work and education to his kids, but may not have much in the way of financial resources, than you would with some dirtbag that won the lottery. I would say that “values” trump finances in how we go about discriminating.

Participant

The bottom line is that we all discriminate to some degree on the basis of culture – we like to hang with folks that share a similar value system, and I think this goes well beyond race.
Wouldn’t racism be different than discrimination. Racism denotes making judgement solely on someone’s race. Discrimination takes into consideration other factors.
Yeah, I’d agree with that. I suppose that racism is kind of a sub-set of overall discrimination. All racists discriminate (by definition), but not all folks who discriminate necessarily do so on the basis of race (could be gender, religion or a bunch of other factors).

ParticipantYou’re probably not a racist, but rather what I refer to as a “culturist” (I made this up). A thought experiment…
You have two applicants. One is a college-educated black guy with a job as an engineer; good credit, etc. The other is a high school-educated white guy that works construction with a few dings on his credit report.
If you’re a white collar – for lack of a better way of putting it – dude, you’re probably going to pick the black dude to rent to, all else being equal. Why? Because he’s probably the closer of the two to you in terms of culture, or how you view the world.
So, I doubt it’s a racial issue so much as a cultural issue (but since I don’t know you I could be wrong). Now… this is where some folks jump up and down and say, “Discriminating on the basis of culture is just veiled racism!” To which I’d respond (as EconProf pointed out), “Talk to Jesse Jackson about that and then get back to me.”
The bottom line is that we all discriminate to some degree on the basis of culture – we like to hang with folks that share a similar value system, and I think this goes well beyond race.

Participant
The healthcare in TJ is already avaialble to us without opening the border any more. But yeah there is something to be said for going down there for routine health care and prescriptions. The system here is broke and getting worse by the day.
Technically, most things in TJ are “already available to us without opening the border any more.” Oftentimes, the hassle is the border itself.
What I’d like to see with healthcare – and this will never ever happen – is to allow doctors/dentists/etc. to practice in San Diego in the same manner they practice in TJ (that is, fewer regulations, less fear of malpractice, etc.) so that you don’t actually have to cross the border to capture the value… but, again, that’s never gonna happen.
Opening the border on healthcare – so to speak – would be an enormous benefit to San Diegans. Because as you mentioned, “the system here is broke…”
