Participant

What’s really sad, IMO, is many of the kids who were raised in San Diego will never be able to find jobs or buy homes here–should they want to. At least that’s what we’ve seen with many of our kid’s friends.
flyer, that is why my kid(s) chose to attend college and settle in SF/SV to work and my youngest is now considering doing same. Not only do the jobs there pay much better than those in SD, the are many more career opportunities for young college grads there and it is easier to move up the ladder in the seven-county bay area. The same could be said for certain parts of LA. I DO believe my kids will eventually be able to buy their own flat(s) and believe it will be likely happen thru owner-carryback financing. Right now, “rent control” is serving them just fine and has been for years. Hailing from Alameda County myself, I am more than happy for them :)
BG, glad to hear things are working out for you and your kids. Everyone has their own idea of “success,” and as long as each person fulfills their own dreams, and can support themselves, who cares what others think or do? I know I don’t. and neither should you.
In the past, you’ve shared quite a bit of your life story with us, and you should be very proud of what your family has achieved.
(On another topic. My wife, who works in film and television, enjoys reading this and other boards when creating characters. I thought that was very interesting.)
I second this. So what if she is opinionated? BG keeps this board from being boring.

Participant
Characterizing CCA as a “lottery” school is technically correct so I take no issue there but I raise the question of what are a kid’s chances of getting in? I have heard but not confirmed a success rate in the range of 90%.
It depends on the year. Last year, all those who wanted to were admitted to CCA. This year, there were a couple of hundred who were not admitted. In any case, yes I think you have to include CCA’s scores in any evaluation of Carmel Valley schools.

Participant
When they get to mid/high school, their “default” schools would be Carmel Valley Middle School
While this is true now, there is a new middle school being built across the street from Canyon Crest High. I believe it will be completed in 3-4 years…? So at that point Carmel Valley Middle would perhaps no longer be the default middle school.
I can tell you that we have a number of friends who have kids in CV and most of them are much happier with the schools than the friends we have in LJ.
100% agree with this. I have several friends in the LJ schools. None of them are as happy with their schools as we and our friends/neighbors have been with the CV schools, as least middle/high schools.
Torrey Pines probably does a little better on the high school level than La Jolla
Actually, Canyon Crest Academy has pulled ahead of TP in test scores over the last couple of years. TP seems to be becoming more of the “sports” school, CCA more the academic (and of course artsy) school.
Good luck to the OP with finding a home!

Participant
”Well, TemekuT, we all tried to help birmingplumb’s son find a Section 8 unit the first time around, when he moved out here from Michigan.”
Hey BG, I know everyone helped. I just was touched by your contribution today and wanted to bless you with a compliment :)
ParticipantIf you are really a treehugger, consider a plug-in. We have the Nissan Leaf and cram our 4-person family plus dog in there just fine. Yes it is cozy but with the solar panels on the roof of our house, we are not burning any oil or gas to get anywhere (aside from materials used to build the car). And it is so awesome to NEVER visit a gas station!

ParticipantER, you are a pro. I have only ever been on the receiving end of short-term rentals, but I definitely want to stay in one of your properties! Very impressive. I can see why you have been as successful as you have in life, you certainly deserve it.

ParticipantWe stream all of our TV (which isn’t that much) from the internet. It’s possible but definitely more of a pain. You don’t always get the shows you want, and I think sports are not very available.
There have been some good threads on this board about internet TV, might want to search those up.
Good luck! I would hate to have to subsidize the couch potato habits of others.

ParticipantWe went through Imperial Cabinets (in Lemon Grove) and were very happy with them.

ParticipantAlso love Turbotax and have used for 10+ years. Vanguard will give it to you free/reduced rate depending on how much you have invested with them. Our taxes are quite complex but the program has had no issues with them.
It seems to me that the hardest part of doing your taxes is gathering together all of the paperwork, receipts, etc. And you have to do that whether you use a CPA or do it yourself. So why not just do it yourself.
If any issues come up, there is a huge user community to provide answers to your questions.

Participant
I don’t have a dog in the gay-marriage fight either way. But NJ already legalized unions with basically the same rights and privileges in 2006, and Christie has no plans to alter that law. If I had my say, I’d make ALL marriages (gay, straight, canine, bovine) into “civil unions” at the state level and make “marriage” the sole province of whatever cult the parties choose to adhere to. This would solve the problem of “equality” without annoying the zealots as much.
Completely agree

ParticipantGorgeous! Am a bit envious, but still would take San Diego overall. We go to “visit winter” in the Sierras whenever we miss it.

I think he was absolutely serious about that, unfortunately.
