ParticipantAnother anecdotal data point here.
My pay has not gone up *at all* since about 2002, yet the rent for the apartment I used to live in has increased ~ 50% from then– from $1100 to $1600. And of course we all know how berserk housing prices have gone in that same time.I am an “almost-professional”– scoped as a technician but doing an engineer’s work. It seems if you are not scoped as an engineer or other technical professional you have been SOL in this economy.
Call me a sucker if you will for staying with the same employer. The coworkers and culture are great; the pay sucks. I could apply across town to a place where I could get a job scoped as an engineer, but I don’t know aobut the culture– especially as far as discrimination. I’ve worked in disrespectful, discriminatory workplaces before and vowed never again. But if I continue to piss my financial future down the drain as I am here, I may have to before it’s too late.

ParticipantI wish they would ditch the knucklehead that bought both Sears and KMart and is trying to turn them into a Frankenstein monster mashup of each other.
“Big K Mart” was much better than the new “Sears Essentials” that they’ve been turned into. Had better variety, looked better, better Customer Service, much better automotive supply area, etc.
I got a Kenmore stackable W/D from Sears for my apartment back in 2007, and a month and a half later the washer started squealing when running. The repairman found that the piece that joins the turning-spindle to the tub itself had shattered. In his words, it looked like it was made “out of pot metal”, all crystalline inside.
He rummaged around in his truck and found he still had an old version of the part (from way before the merger). This was a nice, stamped part and worked fine for the next year that I was in the apt. However, the repairman went to reorder it on his little handheld– and it came up “discontinued”. Apparently they replaced it with the new potmetal cheapy crap version of the part.
After seeing that I have stayed out of Sears like the plague. I hope CEO Idiot gets his hands off it and lets it return to a standard of quality merchandise… but until I see proof that it has I will avoid both stores.

ParticipantI must be like a cat b/c I am put off by the unfamiliar smell of a place until it smells like me. (Not that I stink or anything…)
I almost moved out of a rental until one day I walked in the door and ‘ahh, it smells like home, this isn’t so bad’… so I called up the landlady and asked to renew after all.
OTOH I did move out of another rental just as fast as I could b/c nothing I could do would get rid of the chemical, alien smell of the new paint/carpet/etc that was there when I moved in.
Women readers who have keen senses of smell will probably know what I’m talking about.

Ox, either the cats pick up that you don’t like cats, or they are especially neurotic cats. Based on all the various cats I’ve encountered, I’d put these closer to the neurotic end of the scale (there are friendlier cats than that in the world, believe me.)
If your girlfriend had a previous boyfriend who beat up these cats, that would do it too. I once had a housemate whose cat was petrified of men, and in general was pretty messed up psychologically. Her ex had almost killed it as a kitten.
I wonder if rubbing cat treats between your hands and leaving them in their food dishes would calm them down about you? Way to their hearts and all that.

ParticipantIt’s not just the comps, Zillow is so handy for a world of other things.
I have Zillowed potential rentals to check them out. Armed with the starting info I got from Zillow, I was able to detect flopped flips, less-than-honest rental “agents”, and other hazards to a prospective renter.
I used the mapping function of Zillow, along with a list from a local news station, to figure out where all the houses that burned in 2007 were located. (Hint: avoid a house that is just west of an expanse of brush.)
I love the “historical price” graph at the bottom of a listing, and being able to see what the house cost 10 years ago, etc.
Also that you can see when the house was last purchased, and for how much.
Combined with data from the Treasurer/Tax Collector, Zillow is a huge all-round resource. I hope it, or something like it, stays around.
