I like Concho spend my time at work responding to/sending email, dealing with paperwork, and attending meetings. It all bores the hell out of me. I often wonder why the clock is moving so slowly.
I’d much rather be employed in an endeavor in which I actually created or repaired something. I’m pretty good with my hands and don’t mind getting a little dirty.
As Concho pointed out, there isn’t much money to be made working with ones hands in this day and age. As, I’ve moved “up the ladder”, the more disinterested I have become. I don’t really have a feeling of accomplishment or contribution to our society. The paper just keeps moving along.

Here’s something to be “hopeful” about…there are SO many desirable zip codes in this country where the cost of living is extremely reasonable when compared to SoCal. We have been seriously discussing bugging out of this state for a couple years now…sure, our kids would miss their friends, we would miss the natural beauty of California, and we would have to adjust to less “perfect” weather, but those would be the ONLY things we would miss. By and large, this region is devoid of any intelligent life forms and will certainly never again be anything other than a shadow of it’s former self, with respect to it’s promise of a bright future.[/quote]
I think this is a growing trend. My wife and I have been discussing the very same thing. I’ve been looking at somewhere in the middle for quite some time.
I have a friend that left SoCal last year. He and his family returned to Nebraska. I hear from him from him from time to time. The whole family is much happier. In fact, they are able to no only get by but, prosper on only his income. His wife is now a stay at home mom.
Funny, his favorite saying was also, “keep your powder dry”.

creechrrParticipantAK,
I can’t speak for the others but, my thought is to have as small a mortgage as possible and actually own the place free and clear as soon as possible.
I really hate having interest work against me. That’s throwing money away in my eyes.
I’m not advocating draining your reserves of every last penny to up the down payment. Each situation is different and each person should adjust accordingly.
Given the chance to buy a place that I want, free and clear, without a mortgage I’d stretch to make it work if I could.
:shaking fist: Get off MY lawn! :/shaking fist:

I LOL’d at this gem. The timing was perfect for me as I was getting tired and frustrated with work.
Thanks.
