ParticipantHipmatt,
1) He came on the site to ask a question with the general jist being how to get ahead.
2) After viewing the list of expenses, I thought it would be better to stop tithing $500.00 and save it for a down payment to shelter his family rather than stop buying gas and shutting off the electric and resorting to candle light.
3) Maybe I am wrong. He wanted to know our thoughts.
4) With everyone tithing here, maybe I should start a non-profit 401(C)3 and everyone can give to me and then I can use that for a downpayment and hold church services in my house for 2 hours a week….hmmmmm…not a bad idea….then I could find other loopholes to avoid paying taxes like every other non-profit…
5) Anyone want to start a Church with me? I will afford you a parsonage in my back yard and give you a fancy title…
Sincerely, Contraman

ParticipantReal Estate Fan,
There is no beef here. You have asked everyone’s opinion on how to save money in this day and age. My advice is to take the tithe money and put it toward your downpayment on a house.
Later when you have the means to give outside of taking care of your own household then by all means be charitable to the places or people of your choosing. Just know that you are not obligated to tithe nor is it a minimum that you are required to give.
Out of curiosity, do you give your tithe directly to people in need or a church structure?

ParticipantRealEstateFan,
Do you have any scriptural basis for the statement that the tithe was meant to be a means of giving for those under grace? Just wondering? Also, if you could show me a place anywhere in the bible where money was given as a tithe I would like to see that scripture also…thanks…
In short, just because someone doesn’t tithe to a corporate church setup doesn’t mean they are not givers…..

ParticipantFor starters, I would recommend you stop tithing as it is not applicable to this dispensation of believers as you are under Grace not the Law. I would give that money directly to people in need rather than a preacher somewhere who needs to build another 3 million dollar building to be used once or twice a week…..not smart…give by grace to people not bricks…..

ParticipantLiver,
They will not do this as stated income loans along with increased DTI’s are and have been the holy grail for the run up (speculative) in housing prices over the past few years.
If you keep underwriting DTI ratio’s at 28% (what they used to be) and make people document their income to qualify for a home purchase, not to mention be required to make a down payment, you would see housing drop in SOCAL at least 75%and usher us into a major economic crisis.
Don’t worry this won’t happen as the big banks will be lobbying the hell out of the decision maker’s and padding their pockets to be sure of it….it’s all about the payoffs…
But in the meantime, it makes the FED look like they are doing their job. Always a day late and a dollar short….

ParticipantPS,
Don’t bet your cards on government regulation but rather on the buyer’s of this paper in the secondary market halting buying the portfolio’s laced with risky paper. Countrywide has more money than God and they have a lot of lobbyist in Washington so does HR Block (Option One).
Wells Fargo along with WAMU have just recently loosened their lending guidelines so take that as an example. The government barks, makes an example out of a few that don’t give money to election campaigns and then let’s business as usual take place.
If you don’t believe this look at the SEC and how they have handled corporate fraud and the back dating of options. It goes on and on and on and on just like the song…
