CMcGParticipant
Bush No. 1 was responsible for the first Gulf War. Not a Boomer, by any standards.
You Gen Xers can benefit by our aging. Because of the size of our group, we’re gonna need a whole lot more Alzheimer’s nursing homes, mortuaries, etc.
It’s also worth noting that we did not ask to be born, and certainly not in such numbers. You can blame the “Greatest Generation” for that. I remember the couple next door…they were considered weird because they had only one child. “What’s wrong with them?” was common neighborhood gossip.
And getting a “teenager” job was rough. I applied at the local McDonald’s and I was number 40 on the waiting list. We faced that kind of competition all through our early adulthoods, even after college.
CMcGParticipantFor the person from Oregon…if you live in a middle-class suburb here, you’ll be pretty safe. Do keep in mind that I believe we are the car theft capital of the USA. As for illegals, you probably should worry more about their drunk driving. We’ve had a couple of high-profile drunk driving cases in recent months involving illegals who killed others with their cars/trucks.
Hillcrest and Pacific Beach are very cool areas, but I would not live in either one of them anymore because of the crime. When I lived in P.B., I was burglarized twice and my neighbor was raped. And one infamous very early morning (when it was still dark), a guy who had robbed the gas station behind the house we rented ran past my husband, who was loading his car. The guy had a gun and a bag of money. At least he said, “How’s it going, man?” to my husband!

CMcGParticipantWell, I am the former “bayparkwatcher” (forgot the password and re-registered). As other posters have pointed out, this house is not in Bay Park or Bay Ho, which are further west. This one is in Clairemont, indeed, but only a mile or two from I-5 down Clairemont Drive. Very central location. I’m not biting, but I can see how others would be tempted at this price. I spent the first 10 years of my life living in Clairemont’s “Mountain Streets” area (further east) but my parents moved even further east (Del Cerro was “the sticks” in those days) to get more BRs/BAs. By the way, my parents’ first purchase of a home in San Diego was one of those duplexes on Clairemont Drive. I’m ancient. My dad can’t stand to see what those look like these days.

CMcGParticipantAm not going to bore anyone with my personal story again, but I have a colleague in this situation: She inherited among several siblings part of a central coast house. Because she bought in a less-desirable area pre-2000, but still very central location, she can buy out her siblings. I know several people who are single and cannot afford to buy here even though they are making near $100K. To buy, this is definitely a two-income minimum region.

June 18, 2007 at 8:08 PM in reply to: San Diego RE inventory has stabilized and begun to shrink = have we arrived at the bottom???? #60309CMcGParticipant5yearwaiter, I didn’t. I’m here till I die and I’m a Boomer. Thanks for your comments. I could not have gotten in except I bought before the crash became MSM and I have family who did not want this house to go out of the family. I am simply asking that we treat the newbs not as trolls but as people who found the board and are interested in our viewpoints. I do not like the idea that NO ONE should buy right now. For some people–not many–that is bad advice. BTW, not in NCC. Old close-in suburb that is south of I-8. Very happy here.

I am a bear, but I did buy in February and my situation is unique and I think the blog will get boring if some of you shout down newbs with different opinions or call them trolls. No, I don’t think I’m “special” or that San Diego is immune and I’m equally pissed off that the MSM didn’t move on this story until recently. But let’s keep the dialogue going. Thanks. Been lurking here for a year.

CMcGParticipantI’m stunned at how much some of you make. Me? Divorced mom, putting a kid through college. I have a bachelor’s degree. Make about $80K through a job and a side business. Varies every year; am expecting to make more this year.

June 11, 2007 at 10:39 AM in reply to: Need advice on the pros and cons of interest only loans #58398CMcGParticipantHow does ANYONE not have help from others in this market? Especially for a first-time buyer? I understand that real estate in San Diego is on the decline. I’m just trying to point out that people are still buying, despite all the doom and gloom on this board. I am especially pissed that you think I am relying on others. That’s true as far as this house is concerned. But who do you think is paying for the kid’s med school, car, etc? Don’t scare people off this board. If there’s not a give and take, it will become very boring and die.
