Participant
Can someone comment on solar maintenance?
I try to keep my life simple and don’t want any additional maintenance to worry aboutIf anything, I guess it’s cool to watch your system generate electricity.
I personally think it’s only fair for solar customers to pay something for the grid.
Don’t forget that those solar customers are also helping the utility companies comply with the renewable energy standards. They’re providing a benefit to utility companies, too.

Participant
Speaking of electric bills.
We have been comparing electric bills with friends in Poway (2400 sf) and Escondido (3000 sf). Our San Marcos house is 3000 sf.
All homes are roughly within 10 years age of each other. We have our A/C on 365 days / 24 hrs (wife’s instruction). They don’t.
Poway and Esco bills are more than double ours, approaching $1K/mo during summer.
They both have pools (Esco one is an extremely huge pool) and we don’t.
I’ve read that a pool increases elec use by 50%, appears to be true. Plus being further inland appears to have an effect also.
Back to original topic: we recently considered a portable A/C for a room we have over garage. It gets beat by the sun every afternoon and gets hot. Since we already have central A/C, we found the best solution to be adding a second register in that room. We did that recently and the room stays very comfortable now. Cost us $500 to have it installed (very hard to do in our attic) and love the results.
Yes, running the A/C a lot will drive you into the poor house. We also run our A/C all the time, and we have two old pumps for our pool. We wanted to change out the pool pumps, but the previous owner had a very specific type of system installed for a specific pool vac, so we are stuck unless we want to re-pipe everything. π
We’re in between you and your friends on our energy usage/costs. We’ve had solar panels installed and are waiting for some final work to be done, in addition to SDG&E and city permit stuff, before we can turn it on. It’s killing us to still be paying SDG&E for our electricity!
And I second what your wife says…gotta keep that cool air flowing! π

Participant
Has anyone used Evaporative coolers ( swamp coolers?) in San Diego? Our new place does not have AC. Should I consider it? San Diego should be pretty dry for it to work.
We had one in a house I lived in up in L.A. It was a much older unit, but it worked. San Diego tends to be much more humid, though, so it might not work as well. Probably depends on where you are in SD County. Better if it’s in a very dry area like the eastern part of SD County.

ParticipantWe have a portable A/C unit from when we didn’t have central A/C, and it seems to use almost as much energy as the central air unit. Unless we’re doing something wrong, I just don’t think they’re worth the extra expense *if* you already have central A/C.
OTOH, if you didn’t have central air, I’d recommend the portable as they make a HUGE difference in rooms that just don’t cool down naturally (facing wrong way, no air flow, etc.).

Participant
I recommend this company.

This is who we’ve used in the past. They are professional and know their stuff. Probably not “cheap,” but worth the extra money, IMO.

Participant
It struck me just now on blazing fast wife at sd airport just how fucking awesome it is to be alive
Blazing fast wife, or blazing fast wifi? π
Are you excited because of the wifi, or the wife, or just the fact that it’s good to be alive when you have an awesome family, good internet access, and airplanes that can take you around the world in hours instead of months?

Participant

We have offered to plead guilty to the ID theft and harassment charges since the beginning, 2 years ago, and it is the DA that has insisted on dragging this out.
Not good enough. Poor you how the DA treats you badly, like people who outbid you on houses treat you badly. The court system takes a long time for everyone.I hope you can come out of jail/prison not living in some crazy alternative reality like you were when you made these hideous crimes and like you obviously still do. Sorry for how you got to this point but letting you go won’t fix it. You have made that very clear.
Please plead guilty to all charges and go to work on it.
Have to agree with Blogstar’s posts. Also, identity theft and harassment are not even the worst things you’ve done. Trying to cause a person to be raped and sodomized in a brutal, horrible attack is what you are primarily guilty of, and THAT is what you need to plead guilty to.
What you did (if you are indeed Kathy Rowe) is totally inexcusable. It’s not like you were stealing bread to feed your family. You committed a violent, heinous crime. Just because it didn’t pan out the way you wanted it to doesn’t mean you’re not guilty. Thank goodness those men you solicited had a conscience and a grasp of right and wrong, unlike you.
I feel a lot of sympathy for your husband and daughter, but as Blogstar said, every criminal has a sob story. I hope your family is taken care of; you should have thought about their well-being before you committed those crimes.

ParticipantYes, it’s always existed to some extent, but the big money (like pension funds, mutual funds, and private equity) being in it is newer. The size and scope is greater, and I believe that is very much a result of the Fed’s manipulations. When you have to earn 7-8% in a sub-1% world, there is no choice but to take on more risk.
CA renter
ParticipantOnce again, we can point the finger of blame at the Fed. If not for their manipulation of interest rates, investors wouldn’t be chasing after these types of investments in the numbers that we see here.
Pension funds are back at it again, too. π
