You need to be comfortable providing information to google and having them mine it. Application is called google power meter. I don’t opt into any of the realtime “share” features. Share with your friend, etc You can opt out any time. I will read thru the T&Cs, I would be more concerned about the real-time distribution of power data, e.g. someone can see if power is very low…you’re on vacation..etc.
I suppose they plan to mine the data, perhaps targeted advertising by solar power, or appliance companies. If you’re power consumption is much higher than your neighbors you my get targeted ads by energy efficiency “consultants”. THey will probably generate energy consumption maps perhaps as overlays to google earth, etc…..
Personally, I’m OK with that level of data mining.
For me the utility of tracking my power usage out weighs potential privacy concerns.

BubblesitterParticipantGood comments. I agree that in the mid to longer term 2-7 years stagflation is probably most likely scenario. During that bad 70’s show, inflation was in low double digits and unemployment high. Gold was also at a all time high, nearly $2000 in today’s dollars. So anyhow, I’m holding to my plan, with exception of narrowing downside risk of gold related stocks.
Since original post, we’ve seen widely reported news of potential “currency war” emerging as countries try to get upper hand on exports. Everyone seems to be incented to devalue currency. Heat is increasing on china to appreciate Yuan, they will probably only let it slowly apppreciate.
Bernanke is strongly hinting that there will be large stimulus via asset purchases by the fed, to counter deflation and jumpstart economy.

BubblesitterParticipantThanks for comments…..just doing some preliminary planning. Not ready to take the leap. I’m gonna try vacations in bunch of locales in coming years…perhaps scoping some real estate on the side. I do love old classic cabins, but after my last house an older fixer upper, I’m more partial to a small, simple, efficient, more modern design.
Eavesdropper, thanks for good advice. I too like the mountains of Va, I grew up in DC area and spent lots of time camping along appalachian trail, skyline drive. Awesome in the Fall.
