ParticipantIf your employer offers a 401(k), I would suggest you select a well diversified portfolio of international funds to preserve your wealth. I did this about 2 years back (my 401(k) is 100% international), after getting mauled by during dot com bust and I am a happier man now. Don’t stick to international money markets alone. If you are young, you can afford to be more aggressive and invest in international stock funds. The key word is being 100% international.

ParticipantBecause they were misled! The rating agencies (S&P, Moody, Fitch etc.) made money by knowingly overrating the underlying securities. This was all orchestrated to get good fees for large investment banks and brokerage houses while letting dumb and greedy investors (many pension funds, 401(k), individual investors) left to hold the bag. But in a stroke of bad luck, a lot of big and rich investors are also going to lose their shirts and that is going to be fun to watch. Watch out for a rise in suicides a la 1929!

ParticipantHere in Portland, Oregon, I have made it a habit to carefully watch out for “Tyvek Homes” (Homes half built where builder ran out of money, covered in waterproof paper). In fact, I think quantity of Tyvek paper sold may even be a good indicator of builder pain!

ParticipantNo beating around the bush, it is basically worthless. However, if someone puts a gun to my head, I may say $50K. (I am not kidding). Seriously, when you can get a pretty nice property for about $250K – 300K in a couple of years, why even bother with dumps like that?

ParticipantWell, this one is a bit north in the Carlsbad/Oceanside/Vista triangle, east of I5, but @ 3253 sqft & $184/sqft, can’t be beat in value for money. May not suit you, but the point is, your dream is not only possible, but very probable. You have to wait only till the trough of the coming recession / stagflation.

Participant“more objectionable places in S.D. county”
Besides El Cajon, what other places can be counted in that? I can think of parts Oceanside, Lemon Grove, National City – Chula Vista – San Ysidro. Anything else?
