Participant
I think that if your kid has aspirations to be in fields such as medicine, law, or Wall Street, he should go to the best school possible. Resumes really matter in these fields.
I’m in medicine and I have never met anyone who has come thru the community college route. I’m sure it could be done, but I think it’s much better to go to “at minimum” a UC school. Preferably an Ivy. I wouldn’t even recommend a CSU school, much less a community college.
Now maybe this is because Ivy/UC kids have better MCATs than CSU kids, and that if someone from a CSU got a 36+ on the MCAT, they could get into med school just as easily… but I wouldn’t want to risk it.
I’m sure I’ll get haters for this message but I’m simply telling you how it is.
I am also medicine and I agree.
It matters very much where one goes to college. MCAT and USMLE evens the playing field a little but what school you went to makes a huge difference.
This is especially true if you want to be a specialist. It’s a struggle to get into these coveted spots and will easier to achieve this if you don’t have to fight the headwind.bobby
Participant
Bobby, have you watched the news over the last 2 days? There was no protest, it was a coverup.
Participanttrying to kill an innocent girl. 200 people.
if you show a poorly made film. Tens of thousands show up and go on murderous rampage.
hmmm… what’s important?bobby
Participantwhen we purchased out building in 09, it was 15% down. We did this through SBA.

Participanta while back I commented on the cracks in granite counter during walk through. The landlord happily noted that down.
A few days later, I called them up and mentioned a few more defects I had missed during the initial walk through.
went it came time to check out, there was no penalizing me for the preexisting defects.bobby
Participant
Congratulations on your new home, bobby! 🙂
I’m willing to bet that you and your wife will end up being exceedingly happy with your purchase. There’s something about watching and waiting over many years that makes it even sweeter than if you had purchased a house in more “normal” times.
Three miles is a nice commute, even if it is uphill. At least there’s no snow! :)
thanks.
actually I didn’t want to buy. My wife overruled me.
3 miles is nice but my work attire is suit and tie so biking such a long distance can be a bit difficult.
ah well.. You do what it takes to keep the missus happy….spdrun, 45min walk? I have ADD, don’t think I can tolerate that.

Participantthanks.
the location is a plus/minus.
it’s a good neighborhood but it’s 3 miles away from work up a nice hill. My days of riding to work are numbered.
I have to get a car now.bobby
ParticipantHOA of $85 for a million dollar property? Sounds low. May want to check the figures again. Wouldnt want to be surprised AFTER the house is purchased.

depends on the forum, advices can be quite useful if one uses one’s noggin…

Participantso….
we closed on a house in Belmont.
Wife really really wanted to buy. Bought a place at a price higher than I wanted to but still “affordable”. Crazy how little house one gets for the money these days. Thanks for all the advices.

Participant
Android. Unlike iOS, it doesn’t come crippled out of the box, and you don’t have some prudish f*cks in Palo Alto telling you what apps you’re allowed to install on your own damn device.

Participant
I don’t think anyone is saying all Republicans are racists but if you’re a racists these days, you’re probably a Republican.
I think a man once said “my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. I think that’s a great statement.
apparently some folks believe that if two persons competing for the same position (jobs/school/etc) are equal in every way in their qualifications but if one person is of colored skin, then the colored person should get preferential treatment. Could we agree on whether that is racism or not?

Participant1. no kids. Yes, I would tell them to borrow if they have to (but I think by the time I have kids and they go to school, I would be ale to pay for them).
2. Graduated in 2002. Still have about $100,000 but at 3.xx interest. I can write a check and pay it off if I want to but low interest rate is nice.
3. We grew up in a single mother household income on welfare/foodstamp/garage sales everything. Both my brother and I borrowed heavily for our education. we both are quite happy we did this. Without our education, we would still be dirt poor.

up to $20K? that’s gonna be tough to get a degree.
I think there’s a rule of thumb for how much to borrow: The amount borrow should not exceed the expected annual income for the first few years.I borrowed $225,000 for school. Very glad I did. Would definitely do it again. Wouldn’t be where I am today without this loan.
I wouldn’t borrow for some lib art degree but for a practical field, it’s worth every penny.
bobby, are your SURE you would encourage your kid to take out this size of a student loan TODAY … even for a “practical” degree?
And if you don’t mind my asking, how long ago did you finish borrowing this amt and how much left of your student loan do you still have to pay?
