ParticipantIt can depend on your income as well. If you make too much to contribute to a roth, and don’t have a 401k, your left with contributing to a non-deductable traditional ira. Some whole life plans will provide a minimum return guarantee, like 5%, with the additional advantage that it grows tax free.
Fees are higher (and hidden) in a whole life plan, so most people say to go with term plus your own investments. I treat the whole life as the lower risk part of my retirement planning.

ParticipantYes document, but….. I would visit the appropriate HOA person and have a nice face to face discussion. You sound reasonable. Things can always get out of hand when documents start flying, and much like cutting off someone while driving, letters and emails have that sense of distance and people generally provide much more consideration face to face. One you put a face on the documents, and if your the one being reasonable, the tone will usually change. And if the neighbor is a PITA, sometimes HOA people will say things verbally that they would obviously never put in writing.

Participantjstoesz, value is obviously varies by person, but those houses you referenced are WAY WAY less than what I had expected. Even if you say 2000 sq ft in stead of 1500, its on a tiny lot with ONE bathroom. I’ve had apartments with two. I am from the midwest, but its been a long time. I would have thought you trade-off would have been more like 2-3 acres, 3000 to 4000 sq ft (since your living inside half the year). Out in the woods or on a lake (lots of them in MN), etc.
Lets not even get into the fact is going on 100 years old and probably has heating issues during the 6+ month of cold weather. If you even have to refer to “finished basement” as part of a necessary living space instead of a bonus/fun room to have, your way outside of my expectations. Holy cr*p dude, you wife must be dying out there.
I’m not saying don’t move out of SD. In fact, I think that is the right decision for many. I’m just saying that from your posts it would appear YOUR reasons are financial, and the numbers/value would not add up for many.

ParticipantGet a wifi hotspot from tmobile or similar company. 4G (really a fast 3G), 5 connections, pay as you go, no monthly plan. Plus you can take it anywhere else you vacation.

ParticipantI would agree with the 20% down. As taxes go up, you will need to reduce your taxable income as much as possible. Also, many lenders will allow you to reamitorize once (I did), so if you later decide to pay down a large part of the loan and reduce payments if your investments aren’t doing as good. I did this when I got nervous before the large drop in stocks a few years back. House has gone down a bit too, but not as much as the investments would have, plus I’m not worried about the payment anymore.

ParticipantPhilip Thearles is the best I have found. The do customizations on new cars as well as repair work. Had a similar situation on a new mdx. Their work was completely undetectable including color, finish and texture. They are in El Cajon, so its not the area you wanted, but the few jobs they did for me and also friends of mine the work was perfect. Last time was about 4 years ago though.
