Participant

Savings accounts are not yielding anything and the stock market is too risky for me. I’m sitting on enough cash to buy an investment property outright without going through the hassles of applying for a mortgage.
That may be the case right now, but it makes more sense to think about what savings accounts will yield (or whether other options will be too risky) on average over the entire duration of the mortgage, not just right now.
I think it is risky to just assume interest rates will rise and savings and bonds will pay much more in the future.
We are already in the middle of what might turn out to be called The Lost Decade for the US. Same principles apply except our precipitous crash wasnt caused by raising interest rates but the bubble itself bursting. I personally am not counting on any large rise in interest rates within the next 5 years OR much growth either for many years.
There are very few things that actually create money in the US anymore. Almost all of the largest money makers and new firms are all service and advertising related. All of the internet companies and financial companies just move money from one place to another and most of that money that is in the system is debt. Just the way it is. No hot economy coming anytime soon. The Govt cant do much more and there isnt much out there to create new money, jobs or earnings besides service. Hasnt been for many years. The last bubbles were all created by Govt. intervention including housing.

Participantmy biz partner lives in Costa Rica. It hasnt been cheap in about 7 years. It used to be. You can live in a nice climate similar to San Diego but with more rain if you live inland near the capital but its a city. Living near the beach is almost as pricey as here. The further out of town the cheaper it is. Electricity and internet are spotty and go in and out even on a daily basis.
Medical care is top notch and extremely cheap compared to the U.S. There are also healthcare plans you can get as an Expat to make it even cheaper. Weather is incredible expect during Fall when its the rainy season and it rains much of if not most of the time on and off. Locals are usually well educated and have a higher literacy rate than the U.S. and mostly friendly but you can run into trouble if you meet the wrong people and you may find yourself on your own without help from the lawmen.
If your looking for low cost living most people have to go to Panama, Nicaragua etc now.. Costa Rica’s cheap days are well over and done.

ParticipantSure you could! Back east many doctors use their homes as their offices attached. Old school. I guess back then Dr.s did house calls also and a home office/exam room made it more convenient and more practical for expenses I would think.
Haven’t seen that in San Diego though. I guess I wouldnt want a doctors office or business near my house either. But you know what that neighborhood could use somewhere in that 6 mile hike is a convenient store and gas station. But cant think of anywhere to put it. It is literally a 6-7 mile drive just to get a gallon of milk. Anyone live there have any place they go in particular for that kind of thing? Not to be too off topic.
