ParticipantThis works out great for the banks, they can just not inspect the bills that they give out but inspect the ones that they take in. Then they pass the losses on to their customers! It’s a win-win for them, unfortunately it’s a lose-lose for us 🙁

ParticipantFor our income we can buy around $500-$600K. Here in California we can buy a tiny run down dump with no yard in a crummy part of town.
We bought a pretty nice place here in that price range last August. Yeah you can get a lot more in Colorado but $600K in SD will get you a decent pad. That said I could see moving to CO some day for many of the same reasons you mention.

ParticipantThe 2800 sq ft semi-custom house with a pool in a great area of Plano that was $250k at purchase 2 years ago costs me about $4500 a year in property taxes.
Really? Aren’t property taxes in Plano around 2.15%? So your house appraised at $210K? That is a good deal for a great area of Plano.
Also how are your energy bills? Yard and pool maintenance?
Texas is a good value but it isn’t as cheap as you might think. It is less expensive than here on the whole.

ParticipantI don’t know about other profession, but in 2002, average fresh grad software engineer were making about $45k/yr. Today, fresh grad software engineer should expect between $53k-66k w/ the average/median around $60k. I don’t have info for 1996, but I know in 1987, it was around $27k
Very true, but 1996 was about the start of the big outsourcing wave to India. That has continued and grown as well as expanded into Eastern Europe. My guess is that this has significantly supressed wages for engineers in the US.
