Ash HousewaresParticipant
With your budget and the only apparent requirement being “california weather” you can cast a much wider net than you are currently. Have you considered Santa Barbara? Same weather, and being a university town it has a lot more in the way of restaurants/bars/shops. It’s the quintessential CA beach town, at least in my mind. With all the young college kids the “zest for life” you mention is almost tangible there. Of course with youth comes more general grunginess than Del Mar and the others, so it’s a trade-off.

Ash HousewaresParticipantElectric bikes come in all shapes and sizes. The Yike Bike folds up to the size of a briefcase and is light enough to carry around when you’re not riding it:

At 4k it’s pricey but like all tech gizmos it’ll get cheaper.

Ash HousewaresParticipant
I plan to do this. And please tell me if this is naive or crazy.
The house is vacant. I’ll leave the keys (the old keys left by the previous owner) under the door mat for the individual contractors to use.
I’ll schedule the contractors to come in on certain days to do their work. I plan to stop by each morning before work & each evening after work to check on the progress.
I’m aware of the potential for vandalism, but I think that’s a measured risk.
In that case make sure you change the locks when the work is finished. They could easily make copies while you are away.

For what it’s worth, public employees in my profession and experience level make about 40% more than their private sector counterparts in raw salary; I’m not even counting the extra benefits like retirement pay. I’d vote for something along the lines of public salary=private salary*frac, where frac could be negotiated by profession but ideally around 0.8 to account for the retirement perks.
What do you do and how do I get to do it too?
I was referring to civil engineering (water resources). At my level private pay is around 75-80k, while at LADWP you rarely see engineers making less than six figures. It’s very difficult to get a job there if you already have experience; most are hired as college grads and just never leave.
