Participant
I think that the rights of citizens should come before the rights of foreigners…
Like the right of citizens to sell at a higher price? Or do only citizens who are buyers have rights?
We should not lock locals out of the housing market because foreigners want to buy vacation homes here (and I would argue that other countries have this obligation to their people as well).
The government is not locking anyone out. Savers can compete with foreigners for the same property. They have the mean and the $ to do so, since they have been saving just like those Canadians. Why should government step in and tell who can buy luxury goods? $1M+ homes are a luxury, not necessity.an
ParticipantThese house has been removed from the market. I just noticed that the lot is only 8k and it’s on a lower part of the slope too. The question is, how much does it really cost to build a 4k sq-ft custom home? If you really want to live in 92121 and have a custom home, wouldn’t it be more economical to buy a house like this one: linky for mid $700k, tear it down, and build a 4k sq-ft house on it? Even at $300/sq-ft, that’s only $1.2M on top of $700k, you have 13k sq-ft vs 8k sq-ft, western view vs southern view, and best of all you’ll have a truly custom home to your 100% liking vs a custom home that someone built for them and not you. Or, you can spend $625/sq-ft to get a $3.2M 4000 sq-ft house on a much better lot. With $625/sq-ft, you can have some VERY exotic high end materials.

Participant
Well, the Shaws paid $16,000 for the land in 1960 and subdivided it.
I’m always mindful of wherewithal, but it seems like they have the wherewithal.
It’ll take many more years or decades to sell all the lots.
Are they still alive?
Those houses are just out of place and out of priced for the area. No way they can get $3.2M for those. For $3.2M, either you have to have ocean view for that kind of buildable land for a multi-acre in RSF with much bigger house than 3900 sq-ft. Even if they have the financial wherewithal, do they have the time wherewithal? I would guess they’d have to wait another 60-80 years to get $3.2M for each of those house.

Participant
Think about it, people live in Seattle and Boston and love it even though the weather sucks bad. They tolerate the weather because the cities are cool and have character. Would ANYONE live in SD if it had Seattle’s weather? No! It would be an ugly place w/out the sunshine.
That’s like saying, would anyone live in Seattle/Boston/SF if they have don’t have their character? One thing though is that, city character can change over time but weather is unlikely to change for many years to come.
A lot of SD has a lower mentality crowd and a lot of directionless uneducated people.
What do you mean lower mentality crowd? Are you referring to their education? What do you mean directionless uneducated people? Doesn’t every city have people who are less educated to do the blue collar work?June 20, 2011 at 10:17 AM in reply to: It’s not all gloom and doom. “Silly” Valley values booming #704977an
