EAT SH!#$!@$#%$#%T…. :-D
QCOM crossed 60 today. Last time QCOM was 60 was in March-2000!
Yep, I was hoping for 63+ (which it reaches in after hour yesterday). Too bad it couldn’t get there in regular trading today. Hopefully tomorrow. The volume was HUGE today though. It almost hit 60 2 times in the past year. Every time it got close, Europe came out with some kind of news and bring it back down to high 40s/low 50s :-/. Hopefully Europe stay quiet for a few more months :-D.an

Bandwidth: 40 Hz to 20.000 Hz
Max. acoustic pressure: 104 dB
Amplifier power:
2 x 40 W (2 Ω) Bass
4 x 25 W (2 Ω)
Those are the kinds of number I was expecting. Although the mid drivers at only 4″ is a little lacking. The amps are driving those speakers at 2 Ω, like all stock amps I’ve seen. If you look into amps, you’ll notice the Wattage output increases as the impedance decreases (i.e. the output will be higher at 2 Ω vs 4 Ω). The higher the impedance, the cleaner the power, which would create cleaner sounds. Especially at higher dB.A standard aftermarket 5 channel amps like this one: http://www.bostonacoustics.com/GTA-1005-P613.aspx out puts 4 x 50W (at 4 Ω) or 4 x 80W (at 2 Ω). The subwoofer channel outputs at 2 x 160W or 1 x 250W (at 4 Ω).
Here’s a decent aftermarket subwoofer: http://www.bostonacoustics.com/G310-P566.aspx
It’s rated at 350W RMS, which means it can be driven constantly at 350W. RMS power rating is always lower than peak power. It wouldn’t surprise me if these subs can handle 500W peak. If you look at the magnets on these subwoofers vs the stock 8″, you’ll see what I mean. To drive a tight deep sound, you need big magnets. There’s no way around it.Here’s a decent set of aftermarket components: http://www.bostonacoustics.com/Pro60SE-P601.aspx
Although they’re rated at 50Hz-22kHz frequency response, I wouldn’t want to drive these much lower than 120Hz. I keep the <120Hz dedicated to the subwoofers. My point is, 2 x 40W for the 8" sub and 4 x 25W for mids/highs are quite lacking in my book. If you have a chance, take that Eagle CD to a store that sell aftermarket stereos (like Best Buy) and listen to Hotel California with a high end systems and let me know if you can tell the difference between the stock BMW's sound system and the aftermarket one.

Participant
I think it’s relative and it it could be my ears. My daughter repeatedly tells me I need to get my ears checked. I researched my stereo and it turns out I have the hifi, but not the logic7. I guess my last car had a great stereo because it feels like something is missing, it’s excellent quality, but at max volume, I keep turning the knob wanting for more. It’s like having an old girlfriend with DD’s and then having a new one with C’s, they are great….but where’s the rest, something is missing?
Nicely put and I would say most stock stereos barely pass as B’s, not C’s :-D.
I just read some model specific audiophole blogs and there some really easy and cheap fixes to take it up a few notches without a complete overhaul. I want to keep the actual unit since it is part of the lcd monitor, integrates the phone, has speed sensitive volume and has the ipod plug in the center console, so upgrading speakers and amps is not that big of a deal. I could also go to the doctor and see if it’s me and not the car.
Yeah, upgrading speakers and amps will get you 2/3 of the way there. Unfortunately, most (if not all) stock head unit do not have line out, so you have to connect aftermarket amps to speaker level, which also reduces some clarity. However, it’s still much much better stock.
Do you guys ever feel slightly immature because we are probably all in our 40’s and devoting time and energy to splitting hairs about horsepower and subwoofers. I feel it on occasion, but I’m positive my issues come from spending some of my formitive and poorer years without a stereo at all and a 2 digit horsepower engine (or close to it). No wonder women think we are nuts, we are.
Sorry, but I’m no where near 40’s :-D. No, we’re not nuts. It’s a guy’s version of purses and shoes.

Participant
I wouldn’t consider a car an ideal medium for audiophiles at all.
At any rate, the BMW HiFi system sounds great, even at high db levels.
The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown) sounds absolutely awesome.
Sonic quality is exceptional in my 328i, which in a high end car one would expect.
You’re right, it’s not ideal, but you have to work with what you have. I always bring my Eagle’s CD to demo stereo. Hotel California is one of the best song to test the capability of the stereo. A lot of the 30k+ cars’ stereo does decent, but the highs are not as crisp as I would like and the lows are definitely not as deep and tight. The beginning drum part really test the lows and the guitar solo really test the mids and highs. If you can close your eyes and hear every string being pluck and it sounds as if the guitar is right next to you, then we’re getting some where. Somehow, I doubt a 8″ sub can reproduce notes below 80Hz well like a 10″ or 12″ sub can. When those low notes hit, with a good system, you’ll feel it in your chest, not just hear it. I haven’t seen any stock system that can do that, BMW include. I haven’t tried the latest one, so maybe they’ve improved, but somehow, I doubt it.an
Participant
I just wish it was a little bigger than 2 liters. Definitely better than the previous, but for someone like me who would modify it, the cost to match the 335 performance might be close to the cost of a 335 anyway.
2.0L is ideal for I4 though. Just like 3.0L is ideal for I/V6. It allow you have you a square bore/stroke ratio. I don’t mind 2.0L at all. But I wish they would have incorporate in variable lift into it. Nissan had a turbo 2.0L with variable lift many years back in Japan called the SR20VET. It allow the engine to rev higher and breath better at the higher RPM. That SR20VET was making 280HP many years ago. Too bad Nissan has gotten away from its root (i.e. turbo engines).I personally would take the 335i over the 328i as well. I was just saying that with the new 328i and turbo I4, I personally think it put it over the G37 in my mind. Would be interesting to see what’s Infiniti’s answer to the 328i/335i in the next generation. It’s definitely nice to have competition. Before the G35 came on the scene, everyone was happy with low 200 HP. I would say because of the G35’s 280HP that got BMW to come out with the 335i. The people who benefit most from these competition is the consumer.
I don’t think it would take much to get the 328i to match the stock 335i’s power. However, there’s no replacement for displacements. Which mean the 335i would definitely have a higher ceiling and would not feel too peaky at 400+WHP.

ParticipantTG, sorry to hear about your ballast/xenon issue. Mine came xenon standard, so I don’t have much personal experience with aftermarket xenon, but could it be that the ballast just need to be secured better? Just guessing.
WRT stock speakers. I totally agree with you, I haven’t heard and stock stereo that’s as good as aftermarket ones. All the stock systems I know runs on 2 Ohms, not 4 Ohms like most aftermarket ones. So, although the sound at average decibel is decent, when you start to crank it up, you’ll see its limitation. Not to mention subwoofers. 8″ can’t produce the kind of low notes that a 10″ or a 12″ can do. Size does matter with subwoofers. They also need space, so under the seat is not really ideal for subwoofers. All stock systems I’ve heard so far do lack power. It’s not a BMW thing. It’s cheaper for them to put the weakest amp they can that can be sufficient for your average buyers. But for audiophiles, they’re totally unacceptable.

I used to live on O-side and work in Scripps. Most of the drive is OK, but the 78 to Via Rancho Parkway drives up my blood pressure like crazy. Has the 15 expansion eliminate that traffic bottleneck?
The expansion has completely 100% solved the problem.
I’m literally getting 20 extra minutes of sleep b/c of those Express lanes.
I have the HiFi system in my 328i – (2) 8″ subs under the front seats with an amp in the trunk.
The traffic on the 5 seems to be not as bad as it used to be as well. I wonder if the 10% unemployment is giving you this relief. We’ll only know when the economy is back to full steam ahead. Those are 8″ subs are stock Harman Kardon, right? Or did you custom install those 8″?

Participant
If I were stuck in traffic I might be miserable, but it’s a pretty drive up until Escondido and the traffic moves right along.
With plenty of in-car entertainment available, I even find my commute enjoyable.
The only thing suckier than watching your stock/stock options in either of the bellweathers goes up is a constant reminder that some director/vp/etc always has more shares than you and will out-gun if there really is a good deal.
You and me both. I have my eyes on a few Del Mar houses if it ever hit 50% :-D.an
Participant
I’ve been timing my commute from central Temecula to RB (door to door really): Somewhere between 35-40 minutes.
Wow. That qualifies as an easy commute IMO.
I’m so glad I didn’t move to SEH last year.
And of course the 12 standard speakers and 2 subs in my 328i really help pass the brief time I spend in my car.
I used to have to commute 35-40 minutes and I was miserable. I guess everyone have different tolerance. Now I’m loving my 5-10 minutes commute, depending on how many lights I hit. You’re right, having a good stereo system will make a commute more bearable. How many watts are pumping though your system and how big are those 2 subs? Must be vibrating the car with 2 subs.

Participant
You can slack in an easy class and get a b or a. You slack on an ap class and u can fail.
I don’t know about that. Maybe AP class is much harder now than when I went to HS, but when I slack in regular class, I get an A and depend on the teacher but I can slack in an AP class and still get an A or B. I must really try to get C or below. HS ain’t hard even at the AP level. I say JC is much tougher than AP and have much higher competitions. If your kids truly wants to push the boundary of their capability, take JC class during HS. It will prepare you much more than AP ever will.an
Participant
Stupid rule;

What make you think this will change kids class plan? Those who want to slack would do it regardless. Those who don’t and got into college can probably handle those classes and get decent grades.an
