AN…. I’m not kidding about changing my kid’s last name prior to her entering H.S….Learn from this my friend… Asian americans get screwed in the U.S. and get screwed when we go overseas too….
Thank god I didn’t go to a U.C. school. All I need to do is to donate a few million to my alta mater, and my kid gets admissions into a private school, Ivy League style…. Just kidding…sort of…
Luckily, I don’t have to change my kids’ last name. There’s no way anyone can tell they’re Asian by their names.I don’t think it matters where you went. It only matter how much you donated. I remember getting a question on Stanford’s application asking “Do you see you family’s name on any building” :-D. Paul Jacobs spent his entire college career at UCB. I’m sure Ivy leagues would love to get his kids/grand kids.
I wonder if having heritage at a public university mean anything. What if both of your parents went there and they do donate some to the school.

I guess I was right about this one too..
Rimm, HP, Zynga, Facebook…
Whoa… I’m on a roll.
I wouldn’t count HP just yet. I have a gut feeling that once Windows 8 comes out, their fortune might change. With this layoff, they’re also getting their cost more in control as well. So, if top line growth returns/improve, they might be sitting pretty. We’ll know more this time next year if my prediction is correct.an
ParticipantI just came back from there too. Man, it’s a zoo there, even on the second day. If the turn out can be trusted, I think sdr is right on this one, they’ll have no problem selling them at this price. I was not impressed considering the price, but different stroke for different folks. I like plan 3 the best. I didn’t like the fact that they don’t have full bath down stairs and no formal living room. I don’t like the fact that they don’t have 20+ feet ceiling in the entry and formal family room either. I did like the 12′ double sliding door to the back yard and the covered patio area.

Too bad we don’t have more idiots in CA government.an
ParticipantBased on the picture they posted on their Facebook, it looks like it has good turn out. Let’s see how well they’ll sell. The condo they’re building across the street will sell for starting in the high $300k and they’re only around 900 sq-ft.

By what measure?
Graduation rate and percentage of college bound graduates. All that from a school that have 100% of its students getting subsidized lunch (i.e. low income).an
ParticipantBrian, I know I don’t qualify. I did state that. But I also stated that this is a good step in the right direction. I don’t expect Romney to go from 0-100 with one proposal.
The problem you’re describing about a flood of low income students is only there at the beginning. Overtime, there won’t be any flood. New Charter schools will pop up. So are online schools.
I personally want to buy-in from the parents. Which mean, they would have to transport their own kids. I would use bussing as a business. If parents don’t have the time to drive their own kids, they can pay the cost to bus their kids.
I’m sure some parents in CV would not appreciate kids from East San Diego attending schools in their neighborhoods, but all I can say is, too bad. I’ll point them to Preuss school, which have 100% low income students, yet they’re doing better than all public school in SD county.

Doesn’t that strike you as big brother imposing a Washington solution to the local school districts?
Local schools are mostly funded by local dollars. But the Federal government would then, with the threat of losing Federal funds, force local school districts to implement a Federal solution.
What about the Ron Paul type libertarianism you espouse?

On a local level, how would parents in La Jolla and Carmel Valley feel when their schools are flooded with voucher kids from lower-income neighborhoods?
What he propose isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s definitely a big step in the right direction. To give parents an option to send their kids anywhere they want is a good first step. Even if it’s only for low income kids.
The whole reason why I like it is, money follow the student and put the parents in the driver seat. Sound like a bottom up solution to me.He’s also for increase charter schools and the money can be used for some private schools as well. Which mean, there would be more private and charter school options. LJ and CV might be great compare to other public school, but it ain’t at the top when you count in private schools and Charter schools. If the money is extended to me, I’m not gonna waste that money and send my kid to LJHS or TPHS or Canyon Crest Academy. I’d use that money to supplement the cost of La Jolla Country Day or Bishops. I’m sure if you make vouchers available to all, those who live in LJ/CV would probably do the same.
WRT to you Ron Paul jab, unlike some people, I don’t blindly follow any party line.

Somehow the money will trickle down, and pretty soon, you’ll join the ranks of the rich.
Mitt Romney holds significant advantages over President Obama among white voters who are struggling financially and buffeted by job loss, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Well, I don’t think either romney or obama are gonna make any difference.
I don’t like every policy from Romney but I love how he backing voucher system for education. That alone got my vote. I hope he win and I hope he’ll truly reform our education system.an
ParticipantBG, none of those are around $150k. The cheapest one you linked to is $199k.
When you go above $200k, you can get SFR in MM too:

http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-120017345-10333_Brookhurst_Ln_San_Diego_CA_92126
http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-120015495-8713_Cetus_Rd_San_Diego_CA_92126I didn’t mention SFR because there’s no SFR in MM for around $150k and there are none in Clairemont as well.
an
ParticipantMira Mesa doesn’t have any Mello Roos. I suspect the HOA will be below $100 since there isn’t any community amenities. HOA for surrounding developments to take care of the exterior are around $35-50.

It depends on how picky you are about floor plan and location. Sometimes, there won’t be another house for a long time.an
Participant
Thanks, already liked condos on black mountain drive that are 90k. 1 br 700 sf. but with baby need 2br and they get 150 k for 2nd bedroom. any condo sites away from freeway come to mind that would be worth me popping a down stroke for them? Or rent and wait?
A 2/2 for $150k is very hard to come by right now with the inventory situation. I did a quick comb for 2/2 around $150k and everything is in contingent state. If they’re quick, they might be able to beat out investors for one in this complex around that price: http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-110008131-8217_Jade_Coast_Rd_91_San_Diego_CA_92126But the condo market is white hot right in Mira Mesa. Most are in contingent state and the one that comes on are usually distressed sale, which mean they’ll price it very well. But that also mean it’ll be swamped with investor very quickly.
an
ParticipantI’d recommend them to check out Mira Mesa. It’s closer to Del Mar, similar priced as Clairemont and the housing stocks are newer. School are better too if that matters.
