UC’s schools, if I recall never have face to face interviews (at least not when I did it).
In future, they will just need to check the Facebook/Myspace/Linkedin/G+ profile of the applicant, his parents etc. to determine race!
Another reason to stay off those things !!!
If they really want to, they can find out, even if you’re not on any social networking sites. They can take your social, tie that to your birth certificate, and they can find out what your parents’ race are and what your race is.an

Participant
Ivy league schools from my experience do face to face interviews. That’s where saying your dad/mom went there and having them a benefactor helps.

Worse comes to worse, I’ll have my kid wear a wig.
WRT to Ivy, if they get disqualified because of the face-to-face, then there’s nothing I can do. However, if UC start to implement that, then they might have a leg up. Both if their parents are products of the UC system and we have our name permanently in one of the campus (we made some donation) :-D.There’s nothing bleaching and plastic surgery won’t fix if you want to take it to the extreme.

Participant
Yup, you can clearly see the paper thin laminates rough edges in the cabinets. There are already dents and cracks in some of them.
The patios you see in #2 and #3 are options which could push the price beyond $700K.
The Master Bedrooms are a little small.
I like the Master Bathrooms.
I totally about the patio being an option. I wasn’t expecting it to be included. One of the reasons why we go to check out these new houses is to get remodeling idea. We really like the big double sliding door opening up to the outdoor “room” patio. We’ll probably do that to ours.Master bath is pretty good, but the shower can be a little bigger. The way they lay it out though, you can’t make the shower bigger. I’m now spoiled by my 4′ x 5′ shower, so getting into these showers at the model feel very cramp to me.
I agree the Master Bedrooms are small. We are comparing it to ours and it’s definitely smaller than ours, and these houses are bigger than ours too. WRT the cabinets, did you noticed the side is not even wood or particle board? It’s actually metal. This is the first time I saw metal being used in a cabinet (besides hinges and sliders). I don’t really like the trend with the new houses using particle boards and laminate for cabinets. They look and feel so cheep to me. Especially in houses costing more than 1/2 a Million dollars.

Participant
What is your name? Young or Lee? I think in CA they will assume Lee is Asian. I think the Filipinos are lucky, they have Spanish surnames.
Will it matters if you don’t check the Asian box?
Neither. But I can tell you it sounds like someone famous from Western Europe :-D.May 28, 2012 at 11:15 PM in reply to: OT: UC school and asian american enrollments going down. #744451an
Participant

btw, flu, are you gonna change your daughter’s name to Shaniqua Johnson or something?
Damn right. Although it probably won’t be Johnson, because that might be miscontrued as white, and that wouldn’t be helpful to get around the quota rules probably :(
Johnson is the 2nd most common last name for blacks, only after Williams. So, if you don’t go with Johnson, your other choice would be Williams :-D.

Participant
Dont get me wrong. I know this isn’t an asian versus white thing at all… I just think the entire quota thing is bullshit for anyone of any race.
We’re in the 21st century, and frankly I don’t get why folks still feel that certain ethnicities are “underprivileged” or “underrepresented”. Didn’t we read the article recently that the first time, there were fewer white babies born than non-white babies? And I don’t get how someone that is in the social/economic background of going to a great public school like CV or LJ or Encinitas but nevertheless fits the definition of “underrepresented” minority would be at a greater “disadvantage” versus some white or asian kid that lives in/ the inner city exposed to gangs, drugs, etc. I’m not against helping people with a disadvantage because of the environment, but race shouldn’t be a measurement.
Imho, it should be illegal for an admissions application to ask for race or gender or sexual orientation for that matter…When one applies for admissions, a random application id should be generated attached to the person’s identifying information…The application should only contain that applicationid, and only the persons merits and accomplishments should be considered….
We kinda have that (though not as anonymous) from the 90s up until now at the UC system. So, although it would be great to be completely merit based, I don’t see that happening. But if it does, the result will probably be similar to what you see at the UC system before 2011/2012 in term of racial ratio.May 28, 2012 at 10:30 PM in reply to: OT: UC school and asian american enrollments going down. #744445an

Seriousness though, I guess android O/S techies just got an extension to the shelf life of this skillset if we get into an out war on Android O/S stock versus Android-modified Kindle versus soon to be Android O/S FB phone + Google TV…

flu, Have you thought about the possiblity of Moto-google also making a fork of Android for their own exclusive use? That would really make this landscape, well, weird ..
The day they do that is the day all the other OEM switch to WP7/WP8. Why would OEM stick around and have to compete with Google themselves. Which is why MSFT is not creating their own phone or buy NOK. They have more than enough cash to do so if they wanted to. NOK fortune is actually starting to turn around. Albeit slowly. They finally regained the top smartphone position in Finnish. That’s not saying much as a whole, but that’s a good first start for them. I can see MSFT infuse more cash into NOK, to help them turn around if they need to, but I don’t see NOK being bought out anytime soon. The only platform that FB can buy is either webOS or RIMM. WebOS is open sourced now, so they can totally hijack that if they wanted too. I don’t see how a 4th ecosystem can succeed, especially when they’re competing against 3 companies with very large war chest. GOOG and AAPL are entrenched and MSFT have potential from their PC user base and Windows 8, offering user a tighter integration.
