ParticipantSandi: Yup, we (America) have done a fab job when it comes to maintaining a balance of power in the region, as well as picking some real winners in the region over the past 50 years (Shah of Iran, House of Saud, Saddam).
However, Obama’s repeated gaffes, such as advocating putting US troops into Pakistan, opening dialogue with Syria on a peer-to-peer basis, and using European soft power to coerce Iran out of their nuke program, concern me greatly. He really is a newbie at this kind of thing, and if I had to choose between them, I would take Hillary before him. And I think Hillary is as bad as Bill when it comes to waffling on issues of foreign policy and national security (see Clinton policy on Iraq, North Korea and terrorism in general).
Just so we are clear: I think the Bush Administration’s handling of the Iraq war borders on the criminal.
I agree with your comment on citizens owning guns to protect ourselves from the criminals AND the police. I am concerned that marion doesn’t feel that we have the right of self defense, however. I am going to have to dig up my Saint Augustine and bone up on the theories of Self Defense and The Just War.

Participantmarion: “Guns in the hands of law enforcement have prevented despotism”. Really? Let me give you one example to refer back to that will sink that statement.
Herbert Hoover was head of the FBI from 1924 to 1972. Yep, true story. Forty eight years. He had files on virtually everyone in power in both politics and business, and ran the FBI as a virtual fiefdom. Do some research on a program the FBI ran called COINTELPRO, and then follow that with reading up on Hoover’s vendetta against The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
I am not some conspiracy nut, nor am I some anti-government crackpot. I served my country faithfully, and feel that the US is the best thing going, both as a country and a concept. However, I don’t trust my government as far as I can throw a truck, especially after spending 3 years in Central America during the mid- to late-1980s with the US Army.
So, all other things being equal, I am going to keep my hands on my guns, which will protect my rights. As I stated before, you are more than welcome to put your faith in the police. You might want to run some film from South Central LA during the riots following the Rodney King verdict, though. Remember the video of the LAPD milling around, without a clue as to what to do next? I do.

ParticipantJumby: That is a seriously tough question. While I am a conservative Republican, I don’t see anyone on that side of the aisle that I support. I can’t get behind Hillary and, while I like Obama’s enthusiasm and (apparent) sincerity, I don’t feel he has the experience or the background when it comes to foreign policy/national security or domestic issues (consider his suddenly flagging support for higher teacher standards after being braced by the Teacher’s Union).
Ron Paul intrigues me, but there are certain overly libertarian aspects to his approach that I don’t think will work on the national stage, such as abolition of the IRS or a return to the gold standard.
Sorry for the evasive answer, but it just seems like the candidates keep getting worse and worse with each passing election. When Al Gore starts looking good, you know things are really bad.

Participantpatientrenter: With the ill-informed buffoons we have running the MSM at present, you ought to feel fortunate they knew the right century. So they were a decade off. Mere details.
