Participantgandalf: Not trying to appear as though I am piling on, but I was curious as to your answers to my earlier questions.
This is starting to fall into something of a partisan rut, and I don’t want to see that happen.
I would also be interested in what you think “American Realism” is when it comes to foreign policy. I honestly will profess to not having a clue what the hell that phrase means. Is it a “balance of power” strategy, is it a return to Kissingerian “Realpolitik”? For all I can tell, it portends a return to Bismarck and his “Weltpolitik” strategy.
Zakaria is very coy in describing any of Obama’s position in any detail. My suspicion is that he would have a hard time doing so, because Obama doesn’t have a fully featured foreign policy program. So, when you speak of a return to “American Realism”, I would be curious as to what we are returning to and a description as to what it is.

ParticipantShadowfax: I agree, but a with one strong caveat: We don’t engage either of these “two nutjobs” (as you put it) on a peer-to-peer basis. Giving either any more credibility is a huge mistake.
I do agree that we need to mend fences, but we also need to be mindful of the European propensity to buy time through ceaseless jawboning.
Let me ask you a question: In your mind, what does this multinational force look like? Is this something done in concert with the UN? With NATO? Both of those organizations have shown a fairly high degree of incompetence and ineptitude when it comes to handling these sorts of problems. Just curious as to your thoughts.

ParticipantNost: I think what is truly appalling is that this is more commonplace than you realize. I coach youth football and some of the older brothers and sisters that I come across are unbelievably rude, entitled and downright sociopathic when it comes to morality.
A friend of mine in Iraq, who is a colonel in the Army, commented on how inured to death and destruction his soldiers are, and how little human life seems to matter to them. Makes for good soldiers, but crappy human beings.
