ParticipantPW: There are purportedly pictures of Sarah circa 1984 posing nude.
This just keeps getting better and better, huh?

ParticipantLarry: Core Republican beliefs are NOT the same as those of the current Administration.
I said quite clearly that I wasn’t a fan of pushing religion down anyone’s throat and did NOT equate religion with spirituality.
You, on the other hand, immediately revert to the Leftist playbook and start putting words into my mouth or pushing strawman arguments of your own.
I am against torture (and have argued vociferously so on another thread), against rendition and don’t support the notion of an American Empire. I am against the Patriot Act, and against FISA, as well as programs like the NSA’s Echelon and Carnivore programs.
As far as marriage goes: That’s the province of religion and not government. If two people love each other and want to be together, and the government feels that they need to be involved, then they should sanction a civil union, regardless of the gender(s) of the parties. A conveniently exploited wedge issue that deflects attention from larger and more important issues like the economy, education and the war in Iraq.
“Forcing women to have children against their will”. Yup, do this on a daily basis. Along with my side job in the brigandage business, I frequently cause women to have children against their will. God Almighty, where, exactly, do you come up with this stuff? Do you really believe that every conservative out there is some sort of slavering, war mongering Neanderthal? Have you been propagandized to that point? Or is just easier to shout epithets, tell lies and avoid any real discussion on the issues?
I’d be curious to hear your thoughts, and what your core beliefs are. You’ve apparently divined mine, or so you would imply; I’d like to hear yours.

Participantzippy: I agree, and don’t find it difficult to separate being Catholic from being American. Abortion is a great example. I oppose it on moral grounds, but recognize that it is the law of the land, and if it is to be changed it has to be done within the system.
I disagree with Joe Biden’s stance on abortion, but also recognize that Joe Biden the Catholic and Joe Biden the Senator are, in many ways, separate entities.
I recall watching news footage in one of my PoliSci classes when JFK was elected and laughing at the outright hysteria from some of the reporters about a Catholic “takeover” of the US once Kennedy came to power. As though the Pope was going to start giving orders to Jack Kennedy on things were gonna be from now on.
Catholics, on balance, have done a good job of balancing their beliefs with their role as citizens, as have mainstream Protestants. Where I part company with evangelicals is the notion that America is God’s “country” and anyone not in lockstep with that position is guilty of some sort of heresy. The Religious Right have corrupted and co-opted the Republican Party to the point that it really isn’t recognizable anymore as the party of Reagan or Goldwater. Time to take it back, and get back to our core beliefs.

Participantlarry: Not thin skinned at all, simply tired of those too ignorant to recognize that having faith and spirituality doesn’t make you stupid, nor does it cause some automatic rejection of science. To the contrary.
The fact that some moron paid $28,000 for a grilled cheese sandwich that bears the Virgin Mary’s mug doesn’t make the rest of us idiots. It provides a nice launching point for you, however, to somehow conflate spirituality with stupidity and thus reinforce your own bias against people of faith.
Spirituality does NOT equal Religion. Two very different things. That point somehow seems lost on you, as I have tried to make it on no less than three separate occasions and you went right past it and started banging the “all religions are stupid” drum.
