Participantafx: Good German breweries include Warsteiner (sort of like the Anheuser-Busch of Germany), Kapsreiter, Spaten, Schneider and Hummel-Brau. They range from good to great, and you can find all sorts of different regional brews and seasonal brews.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the lagers and pilsners and bocks, but you might also try Kolsch (lighter and fruitier pale ale), Gose (spiced amber), Berliner Weisse (which is the city’s signature beer) and Rauchbier (smoked malt). Gose and Rauchbier are making a comeback and well worth a try (if you can find them).
Being of German extraction, I am definitely biased, but the squareheads do make great beer (along with fine automobiles, weapons and buxom blondes named Inga).

Participantafx: In our house, Budweiser was referred to as “Buttwiper” and viewed with complete contempt.
Chimay is excellent and one of the trappistinbiers that have a long history dating back to the monks and abbots of Belgium, France and Germany. Being a Catholic, I understand the need for booze to keep you going, and those boys know their stuff.
Along the lines of monk brews, have you tried any of the other Trappist ales, such as Orval or Rochefort? The Dutch Trappists also brew the King’s Ale (Konigsenhoeven), which is great stuff.
We haven’t even gotten to the Germans or Czechs yet! If you like the sweet, heavy stuff, try Aventinus Weizen Eisbock, which is a very rich double bock.

Participantafx: You know, I’m gonna check amongst my buds and conduct a straw poll on piss beer vs. “real” beer.
Growing up in a very German household, I was introduced to pilsners, bocks/double bocks and good lagers at a very young age, so I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment as to the piss beers, but my liking good beer has nothing to do with my politics.
Which brings us to a very key question: What, in your opinion, is the best beer in the world? My pick of a mass produced beer would be Pilsner Urquell, and I’m thinking about which boutique I would pick.
You?

Participantafx: What does Hawking have to do with political theory?
I’ve read “A Brief History Of Time” and I’m conservative. Is there any import to that? Just curious.
I like the liberal mentality that holds that ALL conservatives are dim-witted, poorly read rubes, while ALL liberals are intelligent, witty, urbane and know which fork to use at Spago.
Thank God we’re not generalizing or stereotyping.
