Participant

Few SD/OC upper middle class workers would be interested in a house that costs less than $400K unless they are looking for a rental. I see only one non-contingent SFR’s in PUSD with asking price under $400K. It is a 1000sf shack in a working class Poway neighborhood.
all, that’s because you’re “stuck” on shopping ONLY within the PUSD where its incompetent school board has made p!ss poor borrowing decisions which will end up causing the county assessor to raise taxes on EVERY landowner within it to pay off the bonds they took out at exorbitant usurious interest rates. These poor decisions could also very well end up bankrupting the City of Poway.
Not to mention that the temperature there is routinely 8-15 degrees hotter than metro SD for several months per year.
If you “broaden your horizons” a bit, you will find decent well-built family homes in decent areas of SD County which are not overtly encumbered (as those areas are within the PUSD) for under $400K.
Yes, even today.
OR, you can continue to shop ONLY within the PUSD and line up at the trough with dozens of your sheeple brethren (many obviously ignorant as to the actual long-term fiscal condition of the school district and city) to up-bid each other on every piece of property in sight to far beyond what it will actually ever be worth.
Your choice.
Don’t be so angry, it’s all right.

I would argue that macro and quantifiable conditions such as the economy, number of foreclosures in an area, crime statistics, quality of school district, the CC&R’s and especially an HOA’s balance sheet and monthly dues vs services rendered take precedent over exterior looks when purchasing a house.
You should probably ask the ladies on the board to comment. In our case my wife was interested in schools and crime statistics (sex offenders in particular), the neighborhood look&feel&walkability and the house itself. I had to hit all four – any developing nation looking neighborhoods (e.g. utility poles with overhead power lines along the street) was out of question.
The price, MR and HOA fees were part of ‘can we afford it’, not ‘do we want it’ discussion.

Seriously, what qualifies as a good baseball game? Does the guy with the stick needs to hit or miss the ball? I saw Padres twice, the weather was nice, the people were drowning in nachos and the guys on the field seemed bored worse than the audience.March 22, 2013 at 9:38 AM in reply to: I’m now officially Small Government on Police Funding #760831all

I think what “all” is trying to say is that the ticket revenue helps to offset some of the costs for the PD. If not for that revenue, they might have to raise taxes, instead. It’s better to have the criminals pay more for this extra revenue via tickets and fines — since they are part of the reason that these costs exist — than have law-abiding taxpayers pick up the costs that are currently covered by ticket revenue.
Right. The assumption is that PD will get the money they want one way or the other. The force is with them.

Participant
One of the reasons why I live in an HOA is to have stricter quality of life rules and better maintenance of a neighborhood that what a city council can offer me. It’s past 9:00pm now and the remodeling crew is still working with spotlights shining in the garage and construction tools scattered all about. Construction hours end at 5:00pm, but these violations continue as the remodeling is in its eight month on a 2,000sq/ft tract house.
It is against the code to operate construction equipment between 7pm and 7am.

ParticipantSteven Levitt in Freakonomics makes a good case that the drop in crime rate in 90’s is in large part due to legalization of abortion in 70’s.

ParticipantHunting down and persecuting thieves is a cost, handing out tickets brings in money. Unless you are the unlucky taxpayer who got robbed or received a ticket you are better of financially when cops focus on traffic citations.

ParticipantWhen was your SS first listed? The environment changed a lot since spring of 2012. A condo complex that is taking cash-only offers due to litigation had 6-8 listings a year ago, down from 10-15 two years ago. Right now there are only two, both contingent.

ParticipantA friend of mine made a cash offer 5% over asking price on a house in the area. The house went pending a week after hitting MLS and my friend is not the one who got it.

ParticipantWe added a room to our house in 4S recently. The CC&R says the work must be completed within 6 months, but there is no ‘or else’. It took few days over 6 months (I spent the first 2 months waiting for the approval from the county and the last two months waiting for painters, the actual construction took 4 weeks) and there was no penalty. The HOA did note that I was late, but they took no action (I expected some of the deposit not to be returned).
I believe the county gave us 2 years to finish.
A friend had some construction done in San Marcos. He went about a week over the limit and he had to pay $500/day in penalties (and he did pay).

ParticipantThe elections are 6 months away and for Mrs. Merkel the only thing worse than being perceived as weak with lazy Greeks&Latins is being weak with thieving Slavic oligarchs. The Winter is nearly over and the Germans don’t need to suck the Russian stick for some natural gas until after the elections.

Participant
Could their ill-treatment have anything to do with them having last names ending in “-ez” and “-za” rather than “-son” or “-field?” As much as the liberal states claim equality for all, racism is still very entrenched. And dislike of people suspected of “extreme Southern” roots is sadly much more accepted in the US than other forms of prejudice.
Hope they get a lawyer and soak Loser Angeles for the cost of 1000 new trucks.
I’m guessing the lack of aggressiveness in pursuit of happiness by the victims has something to do with their documentary status. People of incomplete status can be found working in the local newspaper delivery industry. Still weird that the city won’t pay up, it’s not their money anyways. Maybe because they were shot by cops from another city.
