ParticipantI personally come here to get contrarian viewpoints to my own. I tire of “political” blogs because they are nothing but echo chambers. This is the only place I’ve found where various topics can be discussed and I can get new or opposing viewpoints that actually make sense. Sure, it can devolve into shit throwing from time to time, but you’ve got to take the bad with the good. It’s like having to work your way through the crust to get to the delicious combination of peanut butter and jelly in the middle. Yah the crust sucks, but there’s a big reward waiting for you inside if you can get past it. The sandwich is so much more enjoyable knowing that you worked through the crust. I never requested the crust be cut, because otherwise it’s just too easy.

What is $4300 x the number of barrels per day spilled. It’s like 50-200 million per day give or take. That is the EPA fine for gross negligence.[/quote]Good point. I’ve heard the fine-per-barrel numbers as well as the limit on liability, but haven’t heard if either of these are going to be enforced/modified/overturned. Anyone know? I have a feeling that everything’s going to be thrown out the window at some point.
Also, does anyone know how much the drilling/refining industries contribute to the Gulf states’ economies? The way the GOP is coming out today makes it sound like stopping offshore drilling will destroy their economies… as if they weren’t already devastated. I watched the press conference today where they trotted out rig workers who gave sob stories about how they won’t be able to buy their kids toys at WalMart if their offshore drilling jobs remain under moratorium. Certainly these workers are getting shafted at no fault of their own — and I feel sorry for them and their unfortunate situation — but the way the GOP dragged them out to drum up sympathy for the oil industry rubbed me the wrong way. Does the GOP have a valid argument here — that the offshore drilling moratorium is ruining what little economy they have left — or was it just a bunch of theater?

When we (the Tea party) are in power we have some pressing issues to address immediately. One of the more vexing problems is how to contain and roll back liberalism. Liberalism is a true cancer on the moral fiber of this great country. The problem of the “international liberal” is pervasive. It has become clear that a form of soft segregation may be required to ensure the corruption influence of the “international liberal” does not poison the god-fearing people of this great county. The “international liberal” can usually be identified by their clothing and choice of car. A Toyota Prius is a car favored by the “international liberal”. In addition, other identifiers include distinct pachouli and/or weed smell that permeates their musty frumpled clothes. They tend to congregate at major universities with especially high concentrations in the Women’s Study, Journalism and English departments. These are fertile recruiting grounds where they poison the minds of our youth. A modest proposal of separate but equal citizenship for the “international liberal” will be the best course for our country. To ensure minimal interaction with the general population and identify themselves, we propose a “peace” symbol be worn on the right chest of all liberals. Separate education, religious, cultural institutions with proper controls and oversight will enable the “international liberals” to live their way of life without impacting the rest of the population. They can pursue their goals and dreams. Their hard work will set them free.
Anyhow, just a modest proposal.
