Participant
Point is, who on earth aspires to those jobs?
Oh I dunno… immigrants? Children of immigrants? Former strawberry pickers? Or maybe native teenagers who are competing with these immigrants for summer or starter jobs? People who are a lot less fortunate than you?
And it’s not just clerks at TJ Max or dudes frying your taquitos. I’m talking high-paid managers at Louis Vuiton, Tiffany, etc. There is a lot of Mexican money coming into places like Fashion Valley, and to turn their money away because “this is ‘Merca and we speak English, damnit!”, well that’s just stupid.

Participant
And how much do those jobs pay?
How is this relevant? Do you dispute that speaking Spanish is beneficial to landing a job in certain sectors of the economy? That is my claim, and what these jobs pay is irrelevant to whether or not my claim is true. You’ve yet to provide evidence to dispute my claim besides “that’s bullcrap.”

Participant
How do you prove your theory that it does add value?
Go apply for a job at any store in Fashion Valley. Guarantee they’ll hire a bilingual over a strictly English speaker.

Participant
Bigger picture, learing additonal languages here in U.S. is totally worthless if you don’t actually spend significant amount of time overseas actually using the language.
Unless you work in retail in San Diego. Like it or not, Spanish is pretty much a requirement for a retail job in the southwest, even if it’s not officially stated as so.
