Participant
By the way, you ever considred that some (most) of the folks with BC plates driving $50,000 cars actually know English?
I’m sure many of them do. But I know from a family member who works at an expensive FV retailer that most of them don’t.
And I agree it completely depends on location. Spanish is probably fairly useless in Portland or Montana. But I’d also argue that knowing French could be beneficial in states that border the French-speaking states of Canada.

Participant
Other than that, the point of my argument is it is not necessarily beneficial for American children to learn other languages in order to be successful.
I agree with this. My argument is that it doesn’t hurt to know other languages. It can only help. It expands your options.

ParticipantDid you read my second paragraph? Do me a favor. Next time you go to Fashion Valley, count the number of BC license plates on $50,000 cars and come back and tell me knowing Spanish isn’t beneficial to a large number of employees in this area.

Participant
Point is, who on earth aspires to those jobs?
Oh I dunno… immigrants? Children of immigrants? Former strawberry pickers? Or maybe native teenagers who are competing with these immigrants for summer or starter jobs? People who are a lot less fortunate than you?
And it’s not just clerks at TJ Max or dudes frying your taquitos. I’m talking high-paid managers at Louis Vuiton, Tiffany, etc. There is a lot of Mexican money coming into places like Fashion Valley, and to turn their money away because “this is ‘Merca and we speak English, damnit!”, well that’s just stupid.
