ParticipantLet us also not forget that the current leader of the free world got to where he is because of his his family and their money, not his merits. And look what it has gotten us: the largest growth in income disparity in a long time. If that’s not a strong argument against aristocracy, then I don’t know what is.

ParticipantYou’re missing the forest for the trees. Of course there are successful people out there who had a tough road. I am one of them! I’m not saying it’s not possible. Where did I say that? You don’t know me, where I came from, or what I’ve accomplished, so can we avoid making baseless accusations please? Can we return to the discussion at hand rather that resorting to personal attacks? Last I checked, personal attacks mean you don’t have a leg to stand on in an argument. Unless you can provide a valid defense of your argument, get out of the way so that civilized people can continue the discussion.
Anyway, back to reality here, of course there are successful people in this world who have come from difficult circumstances. I am one of them. And I received no hand outs from either my family or my country. I am proud of my accomplishments.
That said, you can’t deny that there’s something wrong with the fact that Richie Rich can ride through college and into the cushy country clubs and BMWs based not on his own merits, but on his last name and his parents’ bank account. That is the very definition of aristocracy, and is the antithesis of what America is all about.
Now if you’d like to provide a well thought out and respectful counter-argument to my post, please do. I’m all ears.

Participantthe USA is one of the few countries where YOU CAN BECOME wealthy through hard work, not by your birth rite or birth class.
I agree with this 100%, but it only works if every individual starts the game on an even playing field. We all know this is not so. In other words, some people have to work harder than others. You can’t tell me that a poor black child in inner city Chicago has the same chances of becoming successful as a silver-spoon fed white child from La Jolla. It just ain’t so.
This nation was founded upon the principle that HARD WORK can make you successful. It was also founded upon principles designed to keep the aristocracy at bay. The aristocracy is exactly what the founding fathers were fleeing from. The rich want to become the aristocracy, but they fail to realize that this nation was designed to prevent that.
The same people espousing “hard work” are the same people espousing the repeal of affirmative action and the estate tax. Unfortunately, these people don’t see the disconnect between their positions.

ParticipantBut what happens when the government and the rich people are one in the same? Conflict of interest much?
