Participant
labeled by the government and watched.
The DHS report is about white supremacists and militants in the vein of McVeigh. Why is the right content to lump themselves in with nutcases like that? Is it not the job of DHS to track and warn against threats to homeland security? Are you saying that the groups mentioned in the report aren’t a threat to homeland security? Have you read the report?

ParticipantSo how are the parties going? While I don’t necessarily agree with most of the teabaggers, I do believe that dissent is the sincerest form of patriotism. It brings a smile to my face knowing that people are out there organizing and making their voices heard.
So, any reports from the tea parties? How are the turnouts?

ParticipantAllan, you have me convinced, however, to play a little devil’s advocate here…
Using your analogies, there are restrictions placed on both the speed limit of the Enzo, and things such as seat belt laws required when operating the Enzo. Do you agree with these restrictions, and would you thus agree with similar restrictions placed on firearms?
In regards to drunk drivers, there are restrictions placed on the sale of alcohol (to minors), and you are required to present photo identification to purchase said alcohol. In some states you can’t purchase alcohol after certain hours. Do you agree with these restrictions and regulations, and thus do you agree with equivalent regulations places on the purchase and usage of firearms?
So while Enzos and alcohol aren’t banned, there are certainly restrictions and laws placed on the sale and usage of both. Why wouldn’t firearms be subjected to similar regulations?

ParticipantWho said anything about repealing the 2nd Amendment? It seems to me that the right, as always, continues to stroke the fears of its constituents by constructing straw men to scare them into line. We’ve seen it time and again. “The gays are going to ruin your marriage.” “The Mexicans are going to take over the country.” “The lefty commies are going to take your guns.”
Are any of these really true? I’ve never quite understood how the supposed tough guy bravado of the right is always so quickly dissolved into a whimpering ball of fear. Really, you’re afraid of gay Mexican communists? That’s so tough.
No sane person disputes the right to bear arms. The question is: which type of arms fall under the 2nd Amendment?. Where does one draw the line? Should the average citizen be allowed to have a pistol or shotgun? Most people would say sure. An M16? Well, maybe. How about some RPGs or maybe mortars? Most people will probably be opposed to that. Does the average citizen have the right to bear nuclear weapons? 99.99% would say no.
We need to move this discussion away from the simpleton black & white “guns vs no guns” pissing match towards a national dialogue on what type of weaponry falls under the 2nd Amendment. Sure there will be extremists on both sides, but the smart move is to find somewhere in the middle where we can all agree. I am certainly not an expert on this subject, so I enjoy hearing different points of view from both sides. We just need to stay away from the extreme positions and try to have an educated discussion.
