Participant
Many know good old Walt Disney made a killing (in movies) during the great depression. Do you feel like the cuts are a trimming of fat– a good thing– or the death throes of a company trying to survive?
Movies made a killing during the depression because they were a cheap outing for any family. Popcorn started showing up in movie theaters during the depression because it was cheap to buy and cheap to make. Nowadays you go into a theater and you get charged $15 bucks for a small popcorn. It’s hard for a trip to the movies to be a good deal when it costs a family of four $75 bucks for a night out. If the movie industry wants to be the darling of this downturn, they’re going to have to increase affordability for struggling families.

Afx: Try El Cuervo in Hillcrest, El Indio (off India Street and Washington), Las Cuatro Milpas (Barrio Logan) and Carnitas Uruapan in Lemon Grove. I’ve had Tacos El Gordo before (good, but pricey) and I’d respectfully suggest you give the above places a try and tell me what you think.
Ack! El Indio is horrible! It has the whole ‘history’ thing going for it, but it saddens me that tourists go there thinking it is the epitome of Mexican food. Every time I go there I am disappointed and reminded of the ‘Mexican’ restaurants I’ve gone to in the Pacific Northwest — basically, about as Mexican as Taco Bell. I’m sorry, but chips drowned in melted cheez-wiz is not Mexican food. Blech! Maybe I’m just spoiled by my Mexico City-born grandmother in law’s cooking.
Cuatros Milpas is GREAT, but never had El Cuervo or Carnitas Uruapan. I will try them out, thanks for the tips. I will say that nothing beats a drunken 2:30am carne asada burrito from La Posta (near El Cuervo).
I’m curious about why you say Tacos El Gordo is expensive? Last time I went it was $1.25 per taco. They’ve certainly raised their prices since they started, but you can still get an excellent authentic meal there for way cheaper than you can get that fake Mexican crap at El Indio.
I forgot to mention my other favorite: El Zarape at the end of Park Blvd in University Heights. The shrimp burrito there is sublime.
Talking about Mexican food is way more fun than talking about swine flu.
