I say buy what you want, where you want and enjoy it. We bought a bigger house in the early 90’s because we outgrew the one we were in and decided we did not want to keep selling and moving up. A lot of people said we would be house poor and we did not need that big a house, but we were happy. We were able to afford it and we have lived here ever since. Buy what makes you happy,

ParticipantI suppose if the mortgage deduction was to be removed as one of those “loopholes” that keeps being discussed in the latest round of debates in DC, then it might change some of my thinking on this. However, I still think that a house is a decent investment long term (depending on when and where you buy of course). To me it beats renting….
