ParticipantAs a teacher in TV I too am wondering how anyone could be making $98,000. Our salary schedules are clearly posted on our district’s website, but they do not mention the all the fees, dues and other things that unvoluntarily are taken out of the paycheck. Additionally, TVUSD teachers voted to keep class size reduction and other programs, as well as teacher jobs by voluntarily taking a pay reduction for next year.

My first 2 years out of college I made way more money but teaching appeals to me and I think the salary is workable, though not generous. We do not have fablulous retirement programs, we have to reach a certain age and have to pay for our own healthcare in retirement, which currently for one person the cost is in excess of $800/month. I can’t imagine what it will be when I am ready to retire!
Anyone who thinks teachers are paid too well has no idea the amount of work we do and what our actual net pay ends up being. I am happy with my decision to teach, but still continually shocked by the lack of respect from the general community. When I voted to reduce my paycheck next year by a significant amount per month, as well as swallowing a 200% per month insurance cost raise, I did it to keep class size reductions for YOUR kids in their math and English classes, I did not receive a pink slip. At least in my district we have proven that most teachers want what is best for students even at a personal financial loss — what have you done for your community recently?

ParticipantMy husband and I put in offers on over 20 properties in TV in the last few months. All were outbid beyond what my piggington trained senses could understand. A couple times we ran into houses that had offers accepted before hitting the market. Then one day at our favorite park we noticed some action in a house down the street. We had looked at the house previously as a short sale and the price was just over what we were looking for. We wandered over and behold, it was an agent from a broker who was changing the key code and taking over the listing since it had just foreclosed. We told him that we wanted the house. He wrote us up an offer immediately and turned it in to the bank even though the house was not listed or in any way ready for sale. We kept along our way, putting in other offers, but 3 weeks later the broker called to let us know that our offer was accepted! They went ahead and listed the house, but put on the listing that it had an offer already. I know that other offers came in but the bank had already accepted ours and took the others as back ups. Have I compromised my morals? I don’t see how: I mostly lucky to be in the park that day and aggressive enough to go ask a guy in suit what he was up to. Now I am getting a great house, bigger and nicer than I’ve ever lived in, for less than I’ve been paying in rent these last few piggington fueled years.

ParticipantWell we are a handpicked buyer in Temecula – but only because we have been very proactive about our home search. We upfront let any realtor we worked with know that we were being aggressive and would be using different realtors for different houses that we offered on. We put in about 25 offers since last October. All of them were outbid (we didn’t want to fall in love and pay more than $100/ft.) or had some shady deal going on like mentioned – they would go pending the same day as they listed, or they would be sold to the realtor’s company, the same thing that others have seen. It has happened over and over to us. One day while walking to the sports park in Harveston we noticed that a short sale home we particularly liked had some activity going on – new people coming and going. We walked over and found out that the home had just been taken over by the bank. We called up the broker representing the bank and made a decent offer. The broker submitted our offer and it was accepted before the bank had even gotten the house ready for the mls, then we had to wait a couple weeks until the home was listed. It went pending after 72 hours and 5 other offers (I don’t know the prices) but ours was already accepted and we entered escrow right away. Now we are waiting for the appraisal, if it comes back lower than we have to renegotiate with the bank, but I doubt it since our offer was not even at the price the house listed for and the same as the house next door which sold last month for the same price but is smaller.
So – I know we didn’t get the best deal in Temecula (tg wins that prize) but we got a nice, 4 year old, decent house in Harveston for a price we can comfortably afford and the total costs with all the taxes and HOA will be less than we pay in rent for a smaller house. We’re pretty happy about it, I still feel a little bad for that one guy who bought a 1900 sq/ft house for $350,000 in here, we paid a lot less for a lot more house!

I started out reading this site obsessively to find data to support my refusal to buy a house when everyone we knew was buying, and now I stick around to read Marion’s posts. Haha, kidding. I have less time to post now but I still try to keep up with all Temecula information. Thanks TG and others!
